+1 DO NOT start policing it yourself. Message the mods and mention you don't need an APH, they will deal with the rest as they see fit.

I don't really think this is "policing" it. Are you saying a recipient doesn't have the right to tell the author what they think unless it's a positive comment about the fic? Everything else should go through mods?

“Hey heads up, you broke the rules by not including my characters. Someone else may be mad but I don’t care.” will likely have the mods coming to yell at *you* even if you are right. That is not normal concrit or a non-positive note on the fic, it is someone other than the mods acting like they are a mod by telling you the rules.

Really?? Okay, I believe you. I've never done that but I've also never realized there was a rule against talking about the rules.

I guess it never occurred to you that this discussion could occur in a way that wasn't quite that ridiculous. "Hey, I really liked my fic, and I personally have no complaints about it, but I suspect you might be new to the Yuletide and matching system, so I wanted to give you a heads-up for future years that generally you're expected to give more equal screen time to both requested characters. Once again, I loved this fic and am in no way complaining. I just wanted to save you potential headaches if you participate in the future, which I hope you do, because you're a great writer."

I would a million times prefer to get a private nudge from the mods than a comment like this if I was the author. (Also, it's hella condescending.)

In all seriousness, that's the kind of comment I'd be tempted to delete. I wouldn't want that on my fic. A brief heads-up from the mods would be vastly preferable.

If it deals with breaking the rules of the exchange, yes, go through the mods. You can say whatever you want to your writer, but if you choose to use this (public) way to tell them they about their rule breaking/misunderstanding, the mods will probably scold you.
