I don't know about any grumbling. Grumbling and then writing your assignment is fine. In this case, the author posted a long grandstanding Twitter rant after the exchange was over and done. If you feel so strongly about the recipient's character that you post a dozen tweets to distance yourself from them, then you need to put on money where your mouth is and default.

Fandom in general is so intensely weird about what people are ~allowed~ to say on their own twitters/tumblrs etc. She was talking to her friends, the thread only ended up on here because someone keyword searched twitter for "yuletide" hoping to find drama.

People are "allowed" to say whatever they want.

But social media (unless it's locked) is not a messenger where you talk to friends. It's not a place where you share private thoughts and have them remain private. It's public. You're shouting it out into the world. Anyone can see it, and the people who do see it might not be your originally intended audience and their reaction might not be "aww, sorry you had a bad time writing for that jerk" but "well, if you feel that way, you should have defaulted, this is kinda shitty".

If you don't want that reaction*, then you should message your friends and rant about it, or put that rant on a friends only DW post.

* And in this case, people didn't even reply to their Twitter post! They just mocked them on an anon meme.

maybe i'm just too autistic to understand why anyone cared what she thought. even on the very off chance her recipient saw it, if her recipient doesn't think she herself is a bad person then why would she care if the author did.

Many people who strongly consider themselves good people will freak the fuck out at any suggestion they are not. For random example, I find a lot of people that both think they are good and know racism is bad will then conclude that that means nothing they say or do can be racist and will aggressively attack anyone trying to point out otherwise.

While this is true, it's a lot simpler: in general, people care when others rant about them. "Well, what they say isn't true, so it doesn't matter" is not how most people would feel about it - on the contrary: if they feel they are judged unfairly, it's MORE offensive to most people, not less as CYRT suggest.

I don't know or care about that person, but if an exchange participant doesn't think there's anything wrong with ranting about their recipient on Twitter because they disapprove of their fandoms, I highly doubt that they feel this only applies to people in British Royals RPF. And dememe says they have a history about complaining about exchange things in namespace, so it's not a one-off.

Well, I'm glad they did because the author was someone I felt mildly positive before but will avoid like the plague now, and I likely wouldn't have see tweets otherwise.

Yeah, to me, there's a difference between chatting with your friends in private DMs or discord and saying, fuck, I almost defaulted because of this assignment, and announcing on twitter that omg, you can't wait to show them your recipient's requests, they're so embarrassing for requesting corgis and can you believe what city they're from, and then finishing it off by saying "Anyway i have maintained my eighteen years yuletide streak and that is all that matters but Yuletide is on thin ice." (BTW, they're still doing Yuletide to this day and started wank this year for the mods moving the deadline 12 hours earlier). I mean, clearly writing a Babysitters Club story for their recipient was so morally reprehensible to them that they wanted to have nothing to do with it, except for that whole part where they happily linked to said story on their twitter.

If you post something on a public platform (especially one where antagonistic engagement is encouraged) and don't realize that it's public and will be read a lot of people you don't know, you're either not mature enough to be on social media, too old to understand social media or dumb as a rock.

The fact that this applies to "a lot of people" doesn't change that. Many people are stupid, yes. That's an explanation, not an excuse.

Okay, but you do have to see there's a difference between an anonymous fandom message board that the majority of people online have never heard of and a social media platform that numbers hundreds of millions of users. If the author was just doing the standard bitching anon on coal and/or meme - well, shit that's why we're all here, isn't it. However, the fact that the author went onto twitter to not only publicly bash their recipient, but also felt the need to link the recip's fandom name on it and mention what city they're from is beyond the pale. I mean, they still have those tweets up and were tweeting about this person as recently as several hours ago (also posting about being on coal, so hey there, glad to see you haven't learned a damn thing!)
