Many people who strongly consider themselves good people will freak the fuck out at any suggestion they are not. For random example, I find a lot of people that both think they are good and know racism is bad will then conclude that that means nothing they say or do can be racist and will aggressively attack anyone trying to point out otherwise.

While this is true, it's a lot simpler: in general, people care when others rant about them. "Well, what they say isn't true, so it doesn't matter" is not how most people would feel about it - on the contrary: if they feel they are judged unfairly, it's MORE offensive to most people, not less as CYRT suggest.
