To be fair, they're right that it has more or less successfully infested fandom.

As I said elsewhere in the thread, I don't think it's against the rules and if you write it with love in your heart and excitement for getting to go wild, you know, whatever, I guess it's not a dick move.

But, again, for me it scores too low on "could have reasonably expected to get this" and too high on "likely to contain offputting or offensive content".

Write omegaverse for people who love it.

I said this elsewhere in this (?) thread - I think it's impossible to guess at what a recipient with a blank sign up likes (you can stalk their social media presence and bookmarks, but those are not always helpful either) and I don't believe in the "stick as close to canon as possible" approach. If a writer has prompts and likes, I would always work with those. If not, I'm going to steer clear of archive warnings and a few other things I consider opt-in and otherwise write the kind of story I want to write. I hope that it'll make the recipient happy, but that's largely up to chance, and if it doesn't, I will at least have enjoyed writing it. Which is better than if I write bland canon fic I hate and which the recip might also hate, so we both have a miserable time.

Omegaverse is on my personal list of too risky to give to someone unprompted. I have a few of those. I don't feel that that restricts me to bland joylessness, there's a lot of real estate to explore.

It would never occur to me to DNW omegaverse for the same reason it would never occur to me to DNW fic where two dudes get stuck while docking each other and a big titty doctor has to perform penile separation surgery to free them: because there are infinite varieties of weird porn scenarios on planet Earth, and Yuletide has always been a place where elaborate porn setups and porn-trope-AUs are not actually opt-out.

Coffee Shop AUs are common and many people hate them and they are perfectly fine to give to a blank sign-up anyway because they are not weird sex things. (Does BDSM Omegaverse Coffee Shop fic exist? I would read that. But also I would ask for it.)

Y'all. Weird sex things are nearly always opt-in. There's a ton of omegaverse that includes precisely zero weird sex things. There are 84,623 omegaverse fics on AO3 rated non-explicit. You can both be right.
