Oh ffs, no, I don't think "people who don't read omegaverse" want to read any variation of omegaverse. People who don't read domestic fluff also don't want to read the character going shopping. And people who don't read casefic don't want to read a murder mystery.

All of these are fairly common DNWs. If you have a blank sign-up, you're not DNWing them. I'm not going to try to read their mind in an effort to play it safe beyond the (relatively few) things I personally consider too risky to give unrequested. If that's "ill-mannered" to you, then that's your opinion and I'm going to have to live with it just like you'll have to live with the fact that your personal opt-in list is not universally agreed on.

These things are common DNWs because most people don't want them. If you're making any assumptions about your blank recip, it should be in line with that.

Let's say they have DNWs, but haven't said anything about omegaverse. They're happy people who only know of alpha and omega as Greek letters. They still shouldn't receive it unprompted.

Like, sorry, apparently this hurts a lot of feelings, but for many of us omegaverse is a weird niche thing and we don't fucking want it. That is going to be as true of someone who's never heard of it but is about to learn, as it is of someone who's learned they have to explicitly DNW it because pushy creeps can't read the room.

I'm not making assumptions about them. I have no idea what they like because they didn't tell me and trying to guess is a fool's game. You're welcome to do that if you like; I'm not going to.

Call it a judgement on what is appropriate to write them rather than an assumption. Otherwise you're defaulting.

That's true for you, and for some fandoms true even for a majority of people, but it's not true for most fandoms for most people and (at least anecdotally) it's more not true for Yuletide rare fandoms than for fandoms in general. Absent information to the contrary, it's more reasonable to assume a yuletide recipient likes the canon and wants more of it than otherwise.

It's fine to like what you like, but enjoying the source material and wanting an extension or a bouncing off place from canon is an extremely normal approach to fandom, especially for series that don't get much fic. The typical fandom cycle doesn't jump right to crazy AUs and only jumps right to fix-it fic if a major character dies. Something along the lines of "canon, but with more kissing" is almost always the initial wave of fic in any fandom.

Personally, I like AUs and I like fix-it fic, but what I don't like is source material that sucks. I drop those, I don't request them for Yuletide. If I got assigned to someone shitting on our shared fandom, I'd be asking them why are you even in fandoms where you don't like the source material? There's endless source material!

That's the whole purpose of being in fandom (and I only do fandom by the way of fanfic) to me. If I like the source material, I'm not interested in messing with it. Fanfic is purely fix-it for me. And if the canon doesn't suck in some way, there's nothing to fix.

There's a wide wide gulf between "this could use some tweaking or expansion" and "this is terrible," though. I think you're talking past everyone replying to you.

For me it amounts to the same thing re: being interested in reading or writing fanfic that's "like canon".

I believe you, but this is the exact opposite of why I do fandom. I would never be in a fandom if I didn't like the source material. I read fanfic when the canon was great but it wasn't enough, and I want more of it.

When I don't love the source material, I don't care about the fanfic.

But if you don't like anything about the canon, there's nothing worth fixing.

I tend to like the characters (or sometimes just the actors and the *idea* of the characters) but not what the story does with them or where it takes them.
