Sorry, I know what you're TRYING to say. "Keep requesting your rare fandoms, you never know!"

But come on, coalie, some fandoms simply are that rare.

They're not, it's impossible. It's a function of how exchanges work. If you request 3 non-existent fandoms that no one has ever heard of but you, you will go to IPH and linger until PDPH but eventually someone is going to sack up and read Winterblumensaat in order to open the exchange.

It might be kittyfic (never happened to me, to my knowledge, but of course it's a possibility), but I've never heard of a regular, non-wanky exchange opening without all participants who complete their assignment getting a gift.

There still has to be someone offering one of your fandoms initially, and if there isn't then the mods ask that person to add another fandom to their signup. You don't just immediately go out to PH.

No, that's wrong. You will go to PH and no one will ask you to add another fandom to your requests (sometimes they will ask if you've been lingering in PDPH, but mostly you can say no).

No, you immediately go out as an IPH if someone doesn't offer your fandoms. The mods might ask you (ask, not demand!) to add other fandoms if you linger the whole writing period, but if you say "sorry, I don't have other fandoms I want", then your PHs will keep lingering until someone picks it up and the exchange won't open before that.

FWIW, no one ever asked me to add any fandoms, even when an exchange was delayed because of my PH. I offered to add some by myself once or twice, but back then literally all my fandoms were tiny, so that didn't help that much and when I eventually got a gift, it was for one of my first few requests rather than the added ones.

Well this is just nonsense.

Well, as CYRT already specified, the point is that the other two should be fandoms that are just as small as Winterblumensaat so that regardless of which one you do eventually get, it will definitely be one of your super-tiny fandoms.

When I said I have fandoms that are so rare that they never see action outside of Yuletide, I was being literal. I don't understand why it was read as some kind of general statement about how you can't get rare fandoms outside of Yuletide.

You're not guaranteed a gift if you're only requesting one fandom, and if you're not requesting one fandom, then you're not guaranteed a gift in a specific fandom. "Some fandoms can only really get gifts in Yuletide" is true, you're just being pedantic.

Next year I'm going to have to actually submit my Winterblumensaat fandom (locally self-published fantasy series from the 1990s that exists online solely as a Goodreads entry with 0 ratings, one old ebay listing, and every slop website that scraped the ebay listing. It's good though.)

Somebody find me two more like that and we can test this.

Stop using Winterblumensaat wrong! The point of Winterblumensaat is that it literally does not exist.

And yet, it became a fandom. Truly amazing.

If I request it next year will anyone offer it?

No, that's not what I'm trying to say. I'm saying "request rare fandoms and nothing else and you WILL get a gift in those fandoms". There's no vague "you never know" about it.

It is possible to be guaranteed a gift in one of your (typically three) requested fandoms and still have fandoms which never see gifts outside of Yuletide. Come on now. Use your imagination.

Again, you don't get it. If you request those three fandom in any other standard multi fandom exchange, you WILL get a gift in one of them. Even if it's three out-of-print books never translated into English.

The exchange won't open until someone wrote you a gift in them.

If you don't bother requesting them, or if you request them alongside a more popular fandom, that's not going to happen of course.

I'm not sure you should be talking about using imagination. Request three of those fandoms that never get anything outside Yuletide and only those. Then wait. You will eventually see a gift in this other exchange too.

If the pinch hit lingers for an eternity and the collection never opens, ok, those fandoms might only exist in Yuletide.
