Morbane's coal

In quantum wankchanics, Morbane's coal is a thought experiment, sometimes described as a paradox, of quantum wankerposition. In the thought experiment, a hypothetical gift may be considered simultaneously both the fic of your dreams (TFOYD) and coal, while it is unread state, as a result of its fate being linked to a random subatomic event that may or may not occur.

The Coaltide interpretation implies that, after a while, the gift is simultaneously TFOYD and coal. Yet, when a coalie clicks on their gift, the coalie sees the gift either TFOYD or coal, not both TFOYD and coal. This poses the question of when exactly quantum wankerposition ends and reality resolves into one possibility or the other.

"the insistence that there just aren't enough female characters to write about says more about your media consumption than it does about the actual landscape of media"

The actual landscape of media does heavily favour male creators and characters though. I'm sure you can come up with niches like some anime or video game genres but as someone who likes cinema, if you're not going out of your way to watch films about women you're going to be watching a lot of films about dudes because they dominate the business. If you're trying to get into films by watching IMDb 100 you'll be in for a sausage fest. And there is simply no LotR, Seven Samurai, Fight Club, the Dark Knight, Godfather, 12 Angry Men, The Good The Bad and The Ugly, Inception or The Matrix with the gender ratios reversed and the same budget and reach. Yes, there are many great films with female dominated casts but if you're into e.g. western or action you're going to be watching dudes most of the time. And that's not your personal failing, that's the landscape of media.

We're not just talking about media, though, we're talking about media plus fannishness. There are lots of "fannish" canons with tons of women, and some megafandoms have female characters who are roundly ignored. This is most obvious in RPF where women actually dominate the field people are writing about (like pop star fandoms) but it's everywhere. Yes, obviously misogyny impacts canon production, but fan misogyny also impacts fic production, and it's silly to pretend otherwise.

DC I just don't find f/f porn (or even kissing) hot, and write and read fic for hot porn. It's that simple.

(Anonymous) 2023-12-26 08:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Sure and that's fine, my pushback was because I wish more people would just say this (or stop discoursing lol) instead of insisting the problem is lack of women in canon, or nebulous societal misogyny that somehow never manifests within fandom but is imposed from without.

That would be because most people don't accept that as an answer. There has to be a ~real reason.

I've written a little F/F, and I have requested it once or twice, but I find that I'm so picky about what I like that I'm not going to get a good gift and/or I'll be so narrow in my request and over-the-top explaining what I want that if I read that request from someone else I'd side-eye it.

Genuinely, what do you think should be done about it? Because personally I don’t really want my femslash tags cluttered up with halfhearted fic from people who’d prefer to write M/M, writing obligatory F/F to earn their “not a misogynist” badge. I don’t think pressuring people to write femslash for political reasons is going to get us anywhere good.

That's the only solution CYRT can offer, so they're not going to do that because even they know it's idiotic.

Re: Porn - M/M

(Anonymous) 2023-12-27 09:29 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah. If people are really doing it out of an internalized misogyny they *can* try to gradually get to a genuine interest in writing and reading about more women, if they come to this realization and resolution on their own. But what results from this kind of reductive finger-wagging is people writing passionless mediocrity because of relentless fandom social pressure.

+1 (from someone who shifted from reading and writing mostly about male characters to reading and writing almost exclusively about female characters, but organically, not out of obligation - I'm just happier this way)

Yeah, it's very "you should eat your vegetables".

Re: Porn - M/M

I always think that analogy is an insult to vegetables. Vegetables are great! They're not an imposition or an obligation nobody likes.

Re: Porn - M/M

(Anonymous) 2023-12-27 10:17 am (UTC)(link)
Some people don't like them and get told they should eat them regardless though, so I think the analogy works the way it's intended.

I hate most vegetables and I resent having to include them in every meal so I don’t die.

They want all m/m fans to grovel before them admitting they are mere brainwashed tools of the patriarchy and only f/f writers deserve praise. Obviously.

(As nonny above said, it is possible for people to expand their horizons and learn to love other things, and honestly I think fandom as a whole *has* been and it's great. So many fewer exclusively m/m spaces and fans than there used to be! But this is not the way too move that forward.)

Re: Porn - M/M

(Anonymous) 2023-12-27 06:52 pm (UTC)(link)
My platform is simple: everyone should leave each other alone. But that really does mean everyone. There is no need to write F/F if you don't want to! You don't have to justify your preferences! But you also don't get a free pass to clog up everyone else's mentions with demands they not discuss their own experiences and perspective just because it makes you feel bad.

If you're pressuring people to write f/f they're not into, you should stop. But if you're throwing a tantrum about how you can Just Tell that f/f is mostly being written by poor beleaguered m/m and m/f fans who are being Forced by Big Femslash to write f/f, you also should stop.

NA (who does write F/F mostly)

Accusing people of something nasty isn't leaving them alone, even if you're saying it in your own space.

Re: Porn - M/M

(Anonymous) 2023-12-27 11:23 pm (UTC)(link)
You're not accusing anyone specific of anything nasty by saying "god there's a lot of misogyny in fandom". If you feel accused by that, that's a personal problem. Or a hit dog hollering, your choice.

Lol, everyone should leave each other alone, but one side is free to post all kinds of shit about the other, because it's their experience and the other side must shut up and not respond.

JFC anyone that thinks they can tell what people think about women and whether or not they have internalised misogyny based solely on fannish output or consumption -with no knowledge of what they read or write outside of fandom and whether or not they're involved in activism that doesn't involve shrieking about other women's porn preferences, is a person that's too fucking dumb to waste time on, and they should shut the fuck up and rejoin the conversation when they've got more than one working braincell

It’s not just harmlessly stating your opinion, by saying “this fandom is so misogynistic” or “m/m is more popular bc misogyny” you are encouraging people to look at that fandom, or m/m shippers, with suspicion. And mostly female m/m shippers, bc lbr no one’s telling men in fandom they should write more lesbian porn. So here we are back at “these terrible fetishising fujos, why don’t they get off to more virtuous porn” and that’s not really a progressive feminist place to be in.
