When you're confident enough in your gift that you're reasonably sure the recipient will like it, but know in your heart it won't be a break out hit. Maybe ten people will comment on it, and you're okay with just that.

(I went into previous years with vastly inflated expectations and suffered the resultant disappointment. Now I know that my talent will never rise above "decent enough, but otherwise unremarkable.")

Formatting question

I have a multiple-chapter fic that I'd like to include a text content warning on. I want to put the warning somewhere that it's easy for people to find/check if they want it, but not in the beginning author's note (to avoid spoilers for readers who don't want them). I'll say where to find the content warning, in that pre-fic note.

Would you place content warnings at the end of the first chapter? Or as part of the end note on the final chapter? I have literally never written anything that warranted a warning before and idk what the convention is

There are about 50 fandoms that I’m interested in reading from, given that they’re in the collection. I haven’t looked at the fandom spread since early December to avoid shaking my gift, so I have no idea what’s actually in the collection.

Tagging mini-challenges

1. Do I only tag a challenge if my recip explicitly signed up for the challenge, or can I tag YuleBuilding/Cheftide/etc, regardless?
2. If a main collection fic contains art, can it be tagged Wrapping Paper even though the main concept of that challenge is Madness oriented?

1. My rule is if the person signed up for Yuleporn, then if the fic has one really hot sex scene or whatever that you included because you know they wanted Yuleporn, you can tag it. Otherwise, I wouldn't. However, if you wrote PWP or a fic that is all about sex, then you can tag the fic Yuleporn without guilt. Same for Crueltide, etc. If you wrote an unprompted crossover wtf is wrong with you, but if it was a like or outright prompted you're good to use Two for One. tl;dr If the recip asked for it then I think it's fine to tag because you wrote it with the challenge in mind, but otherwise a fic needs to be completely dedicated to the theme because people will be looking through those tags for that stuff. Tagging for Yuleporn because your rated T fic has a makeout scene, when your recip didn't even sign up for Yuleporn, isn't a good look and will seem like you're fishing for eyeballs.

2. I think that's fine. I would also tag with Art, Illustration, or whatever the canonical is for fic that has art of one of the scenes in it.

Newbie yuletide madness question

The wiki article says yuletide madness consists of a list of unfulfilled requests gone live Dec 23.

That means a list of recips who as of Dec 23 haven't received anything?

I think that must be very old. Back in the day, requests weren't revealed until very late, rather than being revealed after IPHs are claimed, as is the practice now. So I think that's what "a list of unfulfilled requests" refers to?

However, I'm honestly not positive that's what's being referred to. Could you link the wiki article?

In any case, no, at no point is a list of giftless participants ever published, unless that's how you want to think about the pinch hits that are advertised. There's no treatless list either, if that's what you were thinking of.

If a person requests sickfic and h/c in a fantasy world, would descriptions of a person sick from unknown plague and their mate caring for them (and then getting better) be a little too close to real life for you, Coal? They didn't DNW anything relevant, but I known consensus is that COVID-related stuff is opt-in. Is this plotbunny too close to home this year?

Is plague something mentioned in the world? If so, you’re kinda fine.

If not, you probably wouldn’t have written this fic in 2019 so there may be more covid references than you think, which is risky. Can you not just make it a normal, individual illness since the plague isn’t canonical anyway ?

I have some free time and could potentially spruce up an old treat I started last year. Problem: the recip didn't sign up this year. In fact, they seem to be MIA. Should I or shouldn't I? It might be a nice surprise for them during a hard time, or they might never see it. But if they don't then Yuletide is my only small chance to get eyes on it since it's a fandom only they request.

Odd thing I just noticed

I completed a pinch hit and posted it, and can see it in My Assignments on AO3, showing as fulfilled, and it's showing on my recip's gift page. However, it's not showing in my "Works in Collections", nor can I find it in the yuletide collection under its fandom. Known issue, or something weird that I should ask a mod about?

So one of the latest pinch hits that went out has a shared fandom with me, but they don't have a letter or optional details so I don't know if they would like porn or not. I poked around and they don't write M or E fic, but they have some bookmarked. Should I write my romantic porn as a gift or not? I don't want them to be disgusted.
