Sample reasons to default:
You want to

You can't reconcile the canon, your writing strengths, and your recipient's DNWs

Life got in the way

A new installment of canon ruined your ideas

You use generative AI such as ChatGPT, and you just saw the rule that that's not allowed in this event

You can't see how to get the characters to do what you want them to do

You want to

I'm glad they call out AI, but what are the odds that the kind of person who uses Claude to write their exchange fic is going to think "yeah, but I'm good at it, they won't catch me"?

(Anonymous) 2025-12-04 04:30 am (UTC)(link)
No one's caught me yet

:)

(Anonymous) 2025-12-04 05:05 am (UTC)(link)
Please continue with this roleplay! Why would you use ChatGPT or Claude or another LLM generative tool to “write” an exchange fic?

(Anonymous) 2025-12-04 06:09 am (UTC)(link)
I'm lazy and don't want to put in any effort.

:p

Because it gets past the boring parts quickly.

Why don't you just skip the boring parts, though? That's what I do.

So many writers write out the boring parts, especially with longer fic - and as a reader, it just means there are huge chunks of fic I'm skipping past. It's always annoying, and I don't want my readers to be annoyed, so I leave the boring parts out when I write.

(Anonymous) 2025-12-04 05:14 pm (UTC)(link)
DC If everyone skipped past the parts that bored me when they were writing they would all just be writing daisy chains of smut.

I mean, if you really only like reading PWPs, then there's a pretty simple solution to that.

But I don't think that's quite the same as "author forces themselves to write boring parts of fic (or outsources them to AI)" --> "reader skims boring bits". Like, if you as the author feel like writing a specific part of your fic is boring, reading it will unlikely be a pleasant experience of the reader.

(Anonymous) 2025-12-04 08:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Is there, though? Because even when I sign up to smut exchanges I get people who don't even write minimum smut word count.

(Anonymous) 2025-12-04 09:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Lol, +1. And I've gotten fade to black in freeform exchanges on explicit sex act tags. It is how it is.

(Anonymous) 2025-12-04 10:17 pm (UTC)(link)
If you receive a fic that doesn't meet the requirements of the exchange or the assignment, you really need to contact the mod rather than shrug and say " it is how it is".

(Anonymous) 2025-12-04 10:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Nah man I'd rather not be tossed around in the Mod Cabal.

Sorry you're scared of randos on Discord.

I've gone to the mods about gifts that didn't fulfill the requirements several times over the years, and most mods have been incredibly helpful in handling the matter and I've always been offered an EPH. Obviously it's up to you if you'd rather not communicate with the mods and let someone who's giving unacceptable gifts get away with it, but then you lose the right to complain about it IMO.

And if there are mods you have reasons not to trust to handle a problem, don't do exchanges modded by them.

Personally I’d never even entertain using AI, but for me the difficult parts are not so much boring as not super iddy. But I need them to build up to the iddiness. And they’re not bad, they’re interesting to write, but they just take a lot more effort than the glurgy parts (I say this with love, the glurgy parts are my favourite). Like idk, could you condense my favourite canon to just my id, for instance? Sure. But the Just My Id edition wouldn’t hit nearly as satisfyingly without all the context.

(Anonymous) 2025-12-06 07:33 am (UTC)(link)
If you don't want to write the boring parts, what makes you think anyone would want to read them?

(Anonymous) 2025-12-04 11:55 am (UTC)(link)
Are there free AI checkers that can cope with full length fic?

(Anonymous) 2025-12-04 05:40 pm (UTC)(link)
AI checkers don't actually detect AI.

(Anonymous) 2025-12-04 06:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Of course not. Even ignoring all the other issues, if LLM-generated text detection worked, the people who made the LLMs would train their models against the detector until they passed. But I'm afraid being fully aware of this doesn't stop me wanting to run my fic through an AI detector to see what it says. /o\

(Anonymous) 2025-12-04 11:57 pm (UTC)(link)
lol I would be terrified of doing this because what if the whole thing was AI and it turns out I was chatgpt the whole time
