Why don't you just skip the boring parts, though? That's what I do.

So many writers write out the boring parts, especially with longer fic - and as a reader, it just means there are huge chunks of fic I'm skipping past. It's always annoying, and I don't want my readers to be annoyed, so I leave the boring parts out when I write.

DC If everyone skipped past the parts that bored me when they were writing they would all just be writing daisy chains of smut.

I mean, if you really only like reading PWPs, then there's a pretty simple solution to that.

But I don't think that's quite the same as "author forces themselves to write boring parts of fic (or outsources them to AI)" --> "reader skims boring bits". Like, if you as the author feel like writing a specific part of your fic is boring, reading it will unlikely be a pleasant experience of the reader.

Is there, though? Because even when I sign up to smut exchanges I get people who don't even write minimum smut word count.

Lol, +1. And I've gotten fade to black in freeform exchanges on explicit sex act tags. It is how it is.

If you receive a fic that doesn't meet the requirements of the exchange or the assignment, you really need to contact the mod rather than shrug and say " it is how it is".

(Anonymous) 2025-12-04 10:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Nah man I'd rather not be tossed around in the Mod Cabal.

Sorry you're scared of randos on Discord.

Sorry you interpret everything anyone says as fear, must be a lonely existence

I've gone to the mods about gifts that didn't fulfill the requirements several times over the years, and most mods have been incredibly helpful in handling the matter and I've always been offered an EPH. Obviously it's up to you if you'd rather not communicate with the mods and let someone who's giving unacceptable gifts get away with it, but then you lose the right to complain about it IMO.

And if there are mods you have reasons not to trust to handle a problem, don't do exchanges modded by them.

Bitch I can complain about whatever I want

Sure you can. But it's something that has an easy solution and if you're not able to send a simple email about it, it's your own damn fault and not only are you creating problems for yourself but also are making exchanges worse for others for not bothering to flag bad actors. Sorry, I'm all out of sympathy for that kind of bullshit.

(Anonymous) 2025-12-05 02:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Nobody asked for your sympathy, did you miss that?

(Anonymous) 2025-12-05 02:34 pm (UTC)(link)
You're the one who went on about how you keep getting gifts that don't meet the requirements and was all "that's just how it is".

You're doing the equivalent of walking into the rain, not bothering to use the umbrella in your handbag and claiming there's nothing to be done about getting wet.

(Anonymous) 2025-12-05 02:35 pm (UTC)(link)
And you're having fucking hysterics over someone going "It is what it is" and moving on instead of doing exactly what you want them to.

(Anonymous) 2025-12-05 02:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Being annoyed at someone and telling them that exchanges would be better for everyone if they were better at communicating issues isn't "having fucking hysterics", but off you go I guess.

Okay but other people have been tossed around in the Mod Cabal and were offered fuck-all, so I understand cyrt.

(Anonymous) 2025-12-05 04:38 pm (UTC)(link)
We know about one (1) case where this happened, and clearly the mod in question is a total fuck-up as a mod and kind of a dick. The recipient who had this happen to them couldn't have known in advance, and this really sucks for them, but the conclusion of 'there's a chance that a mod is an asshole' can't be 'so I'm not communicating issues to any mods at all, but I'll do their exchanges nonetheless".

If the mod's that bad, there's an equal chance that they'll toss you around in the Mod Cabal for something else (your sign-up, your DNWs, or your fic if your recip goes to them and they falsely side with them *cough*MFD*cough*) without you flagging an issue with them first. If you don't want to take that risk, the only way to avoid it is not to do exchanges headed by mods you don't trust.

Personally I’d never even entertain using AI, but for me the difficult parts are not so much boring as not super iddy. But I need them to build up to the iddiness. And they’re not bad, they’re interesting to write, but they just take a lot more effort than the glurgy parts (I say this with love, the glurgy parts are my favourite). Like idk, could you condense my favourite canon to just my id, for instance? Sure. But the Just My Id edition wouldn’t hit nearly as satisfyingly without all the context.
