Canon review

How seriously do you take it? How do you approach it? At what part of the process do you do it?

Extremely seriously, and I wish I didn't! Doesn't matter if I'm writing for a favorite that I've seen/read/played/whatever a hundred times before, I still feel like I must consume it again just before I start writing. Then while writing I'll continually consume parts of it over and over again, like specific scenes.

Same. :(

I also do this, to the point I won't watch a couple movies again any time this decade because I was rewatching scenes (and reading scripts) so closely for a Yuletide assignment.

... and then I go down a rabbit hole of period research or reviewing similar canons trying to get the voice right and drive myself crazy all November. I keep saying I won't this year, and then I do.

I start with it, because I want to be sure about any relevant details, but also because it's important for me to get the voices and style right. I like to attempt pastiches for books etc. I always take it seriously, but how in depth it needs to be depends on the canon. If it's something I'm very familiar with, just a quick refresh is enough, I don't have to go through all the canon. Obviously sometimes I need to look stuff up while writing as well, but that's usually just tiny details.

I only offer fandoms I already know well enough or have revisited recently enough that I don't really need to do it in terms of remembering what happens or the general dynamics and characterisation, so any canon review I do is just supplementary brushing up - either revisiting a specific scene or episode because it's directly related to my story idea, or maybe dipping in to refresh my sense of what the character voices sound like for some of the more minor characters. So it's usually something that happens more towards the middle of the process where I already have a good idea of what I'm intending to write and am just tightening up the specifics.

aside from it depending on how recently i've consumed the canon, my main concern is how big an issue it'll be to fix an issue later if it turns out to be wrong; so like, is a major plot point of my fic reliant on X canon thing being correct (in which case I'll review the whole thing before going further) or is it something that I can insert a placeholder for/fix later pretty easily (in which case I'll probably start writing immediately and check canon for fixes later)

I usually pick my offers based mostly on how much I would love the excuse to do canon review. And I am almost never lucky enough that enough things I'm already deeply into are nominated, so I usually need it. I'm usually not going to have a real idea for the fic until the canon review is done, either, so it has to go first.

For treats though I usually pick stuff where I don't need canon review for that prompt, or canon review will take five minutes or less.

I do canon review before I start to make sure my plot aligns with canon and I've got the details and voices right. Then I dip back in as I'm writing when I need to check things.

In previous, as the very first thing with the angle of studying the canon in relation to requested characters or prompts.

This year I matched on a year-round fandom, so I get to skip that step.
