That really depends on the canon and what kind of likes your recip has. If they are into identity porn and the fandom lends itself to it, it would be fine. If it's some wacky plot they didn't ask for or didn't give any indication of liking, I'd be cautious.

If you're choosing to do this because you've got a really clever story in mind and you think the result will satisfy the recip, that's fine, but if you're just looking for a loophole that will let you write something other than what you offered, that's shitty.

If 95% of my gift was about some bullshit OCs, I'm gonna be annoyed, even if you do the Scooby-Doo reveal at the end.

Is this like, a Batman request, and the POV character doesn't know that Matches Malone is Bruce/Batman? If yes, that's probably fine.

If it's Bob The Unknown does random shit, then it turns out last minute he's actually Blorbo undercover, even though Blorbo isn't from a canon where that kind of thing happens and recip never even hinted at liking anything like that? Nope, not okay.

Miss Marple, Lord Wimsey or Bruce Wayne can reasonably be expected to do undercover work. Is your canon/character like that too? Does your recip express likes in that direction?

Or if it's a reincarnation thing, did your recip request that?

Genderswap with new names? Requested AU where everything happens in America instead, with new names? Modern AU?

lmao I can actually imagine a bunch of options... but the answer remains the same. Does your recip want it, or does canon at least lean in that direction?

Sounds like a high-risk strategy where some people might enjoy it but the ones who hate it are really going to hate it. Would not risk that in a Yuletide fic without strong indications in their prompts that they would be up for it, TBH. (Do they say they like twist endings, identity porn and outsider POVs, etc.? You're probably good! Do they just talk about how much they love to see their blorbos interact? I would not.)

I know nothing about this fandom. If I did, I would likely write for these:

LuckyDiceKirby - clear likes, clear DNWs, a few good prompts

neveralarch - this is fine; I appreciate the DNW of "this is in canon but I do not want it explicit/focused on"

Shadaras - I like this letter best, but they would also clearly be most happy with the sort of issue/character focused fic I don't particularly enjoy writing

And I would likely not write for these:

insoucinyance - a few prompts but meh

ElDiablito_SF - singular prompt for two different couples, although it seems pretty easy to do both in one go

doublesloth - good expansion on likes but no specific prompts beyond "explore"

Yellow - minimalist; even if I knew the character, this wouldn't be enough for me

mercuryandglass - seems to be asking for focus on an unpicked character, despite that character being in tagset??

rnanqo - stump fisting? lol no

I am too lazy to order them all, so, short version: I would write for pretty much every Scholomance + Worldbuilding request there, with I think hidden_variable being at the top, but not for any of the others.

It's been a few years since I read this book and I haven't read the sequel. I can't say that I shared rnanqo's disappointment that the book's fisting scene involved the hand that still had a hand, but... I think that prompt would go right at the top of my list. I'm actually a little tempted to try writing it, except I really don't have time to revisit/reread the book and would definitely need to do that first.

Sorry, coalie. I don't "hate" mine but I wish the prompts they offered included anything I was even slightly genuinely interested in writing. This is gonna be a slog and I've got a feeling I may end up defauling. I'm giving it some time, seeing how I go and then if I still don't like the state of things I'll default. The prompts are fine, just an id mismatch. I want my recip to have a good story with heart in it.
