Madness hypothetical

(Anonymous) 2021-11-05 05:27 am (UTC)(link)
Would you want to get a mediocre treat that is a couple hundred words long?

Re: Madness hypothetical

(Anonymous) 2021-11-05 05:32 am (UTC)(link)
For my tiny tiny fandom with no fics of any kind on the archive?

YES!!!!

I would revel in proof that someone else in this big world knows and loves it!

That's the best length for a mediocre treat to be, really.

look, i'm never going to say no to treats, especially for my tiny trio of obscure fandoms. DO IT!

Yes!!!

Re: Madness hypothetical

Mediocrity is so subjective but YES

Re: Madness hypothetical

(Anonymous) 2021-11-05 01:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Sure! I've gotten short Madness treats that I liked more than my main gift in other years.

Re: Madness hypothetical

(Anonymous) 2021-11-05 01:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Absolutely! By Yuletide reveals, even if this hypothetical treat were somehow objectively mediocre, I would neither notice nor care. AAAAA ANOTHER THING IN MY TINY FANDOMS ALL FOR ME ;-;!

Re: Madness hypothetical

No. Both for mediocrity and or length.

I don't want to have to pretend to like a boring, ugly, itchy sweater of a fic even though social convention demands a return display of gratitude.

I see this is your first Yuletide. Welcome!

I've been doing yuletide since 2008. I write and edit professionally. (At this point he main reason I'm still in YT at all is nostalgia.)

I don't read fic shorter than 1k because it's rare a story of that length has anything worth saying in it.

I don't read mediocre/badfic on purpose and I don't want to pretend to like a gift that's badfic to me just because someone found my signup in the app and put my name on the gift tag.

I hope you DNW fic under 1k, then!

DC

I don't think you need to DNW fic under 1k in an exchange where the minimum is 1k.

“DNW: bad writers” you really can’t control writing quality in an exchange unless you set up the snooty mcsnoot exchange people were joking about in an earlier thread

In your opinion, of course.

Re: Madness hypothetical

Is it in my ultra-rare fandom that currently has 0 fics? If so, YES. I WANT ANYTHING.

For more popular fandoms, it would depend on what "mediocre" means.

You tried to write something I'd like, but it didn't turn out as good as you hoped it would? Yes, I'd still want it.

You wrote something about the fandom and characters I requested, but it has almost nothing to do with anything else I said I like? No, I probably won't be excited about that.

Eh. In general, every treat that isn't spitefic is a good thing because it's an extra. The alternative isn't something longer and better; it's nothing.

I'm generally not thrilled to see authors describe their works as mediocre. Especially when it's a gift work and it's still over a month and a half until reveals. If you feel what you write is mediocre by your own standards, then why don't you polish it until you're happy with it? This isn't even about how the recip feels about the fic; it's about how you feel posting something that's mediocre with your name attached.

Re: Madness hypothetical

(Anonymous) 2021-11-05 03:14 pm (UTC)(link)
If it follows one of my prompts/likes, yes. Otherwise, no, and that's regardless of length.

Re: Madness hypothetical

(Anonymous) 2021-11-05 05:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes! I live and die by the "more cake" principle, so absolutely! Better than nothing!

Re: Madness hypothetical

(Anonymous) 2021-11-05 05:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes! Just thinking that someone wrote it as a treat, because they wanted to, and not just because they were assigned to me, makes it special. It's the thought that counts.
