When do you decide if you're in or out?

should yuletide go back to that one weird year where they made people write a fic in order to sign up for the first time?

YES because I personally need to be forced to write fic to write fic.

That would kill Yuletide. Everyone would just do other exchanges.

What about 'em?

Is there a minichallenge for canon-divergence AUs? Because they are my absolute favorite and I will eat them up like candy in all my fandoms.

I'd call it "What If?", if Marvel hadn't taken that already.

There would probably be fewer socks signing up. For better or worse. And we'd probably end up with more fic in the end.

But also...nah.

Would this make Yuletide turn into the mythical Goodfic Exchange or would it push Yuletide into a ODAOfest?

I can't decide if I want to say yes because that one year should not be the only year to have to do it or no because I guess that makes us 05 Yuletide newbies special.

Eh. I was going to say 'that's so broad it's most of the prompts' but on the other hand, Yuleporn exists. But it doesn't have the benefit of "I am looking for a specific thing and will take this post as recs for this thing".

I defaulted once within a day of getting my assignment. The other time I defaulted in mid-November, when I could see that my sticky RL issues would not be clearing up anytime soon.

How would we end up with more fic?

Everyone would have to write two fics. Presuming that more than half the people who sign up now still sign up - and/or that the people who do sign up are the type to write multiple fics/treats anyway, I think it would shake out to having a bit more fic.

It wouldn't be everyone writing two fics, though, would it? I thought it would just be new people who haven't done Yuletide before.

I don't want this for yuletide, but now I do want this for another exchange. I want a snooty exchange with a participation bar, required comments, banning for bad faith participation, etc.

There are several that are essentially the same thing, which is something I’m interested in writing, but.

Some people look at comment history. I go with whatever prompt makes a fic come spilling out of my pen; I'm a very self-indulgent writer in that I only ever write treats I enjoy writing and come easily. If it's forced at all I move on.

I write the story that feels right to me for the prompt first and only then decide, based on which potential recip it matches best for additional likes. (I also often have at least one potential recip get dropped because their DNWs include something that is maybe in the story if you squint really hard, and with multiple potential recips I won't bother checking in to clarify it's ok, etc, since I can just give it to someone else). After that it's favorotism (anyone who ever treated, beta'd, or otherwise was nice to me), comment history, and flipping a coin.

It's sort of Peter Pan in the future, but kind of a past-future, and it's got some violence that I hope is going to be shocking, but no sex.

Backstory but structured as a fairy tale.

1. make a list of all the potential recips for what you want to write
2. check their commenting history and weed out non-commenters
3. weed out anyone wanky
4. make note of the remaining potential recips
5. write fic
6. see if resulting fic is more suited to a particular potential recip's optional details; if so, give it to that recip
7. if not and they're all much of a muchness, then wait until xmas eve and gift it to the potential recip with the least number of gifts
8. if recips are tied for least number of gifts it's time to pick a name out of a hat
