This is Yuletide, everybody make a scene

I am the sock with the tear-away face
Low-effort with your gift and gone without a trace
I am the "who" when you call, "Who does an exchange without acknowledging their gift?"
I am the wanker blowing through your fics comments
I am the coalie dragging your letter at night
Filling your exchange to the brim with fright!

Please, someone nominate this poem as a fandom!

Yeah, but he's not central to MR the way Aslan and the concept of Aslan is to HaHB.

I've always done it first-come, first-served when I offered free spots. The one exception was when someone suggested I add a couple of fan favorite characters, but said that they weren't planning to request the fandom themselves. In that instance, I waited until someone actually wanting the fandom asked me to add characters.

+1 I can see the argument both ways (and I also bet there would have been more pushback about separating out Monstrous Regiment if the Discworld fandom had been bigger when the argument was made), but Aslan comes into the story far earlier in HHB than Vimes does in MR, and Aslan is a thread tying all the Narnia books together whereas Vimes is completely absent from many Discworld books.

otoh the book is completely understandable even if you have no previous knowledge of aslan, just like monstrous regiment is even if you don't know who vimes is

FFN

(Anonymous) 2020-09-27 09:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Do you think we will ever be free of FFN, or will it be counted in totals until the end of time?

Re: FFN

(Anonymous) 2020-09-27 10:14 pm (UTC)(link)
If we were "free" of FFN, it would just lead to coalies freaking the fuck out about how X isn't a rare fandom, it's just rare on AO3.

Genuine question: who cares?

Dunkirk is eligible but it probably has a fuckton of fic on Wattpad. Same goes for a lot of cnovels or BL dramas. TW, TSN and GK made it in for a few years because they were LJ fandoms. SPN should technically be WAY BIGGER because it was an LJ fandom for so long and had its own archive.

We are posting and reading our fics on AO3. If a random anime megafandom gets it into Yuletide because it has no AO3 fandom I don’t personally care. There will not be 90 Sailor Moon fics in 2020 because even though lots of people know it, it isn’t that popular a fandom anymore, especially in AO3 fandom. YoI didn’t even blow up THAT much and it was a fandom at its peak. People act like FFN is the Great Wall keeping an influx of popular megafandoms from taking over Yuletide. If people really wanted to write those fandoms on AO3, they would be ineligible even if FFN was gone. If by some magic stroke Sailor Moon turns into Captive Prince where it gets a steady stream of fics and eventually hits 1k applicable works on AO3, good for them and goodbye Sailor Moon.

+1000

The outcry made sense when Yuletide mods tried to stop counting FFN a number of years ago, back when AO3 was still a new and relatively small archive. But AO3's well-established now, and the number of megafandoms that would become eligible with this rule change is now far more reasonable.

And as you point out, large fandoms are still getting into Yuletide, as long as their fic is mostly posted on Wattpad or LJ or single fandom archives or etc. It seems a lot simpler and fairer to just use AO3 to determine fandom eligibility.

Out of curiosity: for people who want to keep FFN totals in, why?

Re: FFN

(Anonymous) 2020-09-28 12:45 am (UTC)(link)
Actual coalies with this opinion can correct me, but they dislike the idea that FFN = trash weebfic, expect Yuletide participants still to read FFNfic even though I’m sure the average 18 year old participant has never once been to the site, and dislike that a lot of old fandoms would suddenly become eligible.

For the last one, I suspect the reason it eats at them is because it wouldn’t be THEIR old fandom, which tragically has an Ao3 full of xposting of old fic or had single fandom archive be merged with Ao3. Or their current fandom is full of trash fic and they don’t like the idea that people who have the majority of their trash fic on FFN getting a reset when they can’t. If they’re fucked, everyone should be fucked too.

Some people also just think their fandom of one will lose eyeballs if a more popular fandom gets in.

I honestly think if you do away with FFN and drop the max limit then that would shut the pro-FFN crowd up and still suit the majority of Ao3-only participants. Have the cutoff be 700 works or whatever and be done with it!

sa

Also mentioning Wattpad is relevant. If Yuletide REALLY cared about being fair, they would add Wattpad. If FFN lost their easy sorting methods or had another purge, I bet the mods would drop it. The only reason they keep it is because it’s easy, and the reason they won’t touch Wattpad even though its where a huge number of new fandoms have their fic posted is because it’s hard. So older fandoms are punished, but newer fandoms can be in Yuletide forever because theres 300 fics on Ao3 but 5k longfics over on Wattpad.

Pro-FFN people should be campaigning for Wattpad to be counted because it failing to be means a lot of new megafandoms get in, and I’m sorry but I bet there are way more Wattpad/Tumblr/Twitter & Ao3 writers/readers these days than there are FFN & Ao3 writers/readers. (Most are Ao3 only, which is the major point.) If they’re sooooooo concerned with being fair and that the quality of fic doesn’t matter for any FFN needs to stay, make morbane’s ass go digging through Wattpad for eligibility for every single fandom too.

I bet all the principled stances of the mods for why FFN needs to stay would be dropped if they had to do that extra work of actually following the logic.

I just like the idea of judging "rare" by more standards than "rare on the AO3", especially since I am one of those people who don't fit into the standard AO3 demographic, being mostly a het fan. I have some fandoms that are still pretty active on ff.net, and if there was a way to navigate Wattpad. The only reason I don't read fic there is because I just can't figure out how it works (it doesn't help that it seems to think I want to read fic in my browser language only).

Re: FFN

(Anonymous) 2020-09-28 01:05 am (UTC)(link)
I'm pretty ambivalent about it, but I have the corresponding question- why are people so het up about dropping FFN? Is it more than just the convenience of not having to check?

Re: FFN

(Anonymous) 2020-09-28 02:07 am (UTC)(link)
For me, yes. And also that it just doesn’t make sense. If they were still counting single archives or ever counted LJ I would think different. Just because FF.net is easy to filter doesn’t mean anything to me. The minute they did their first purge (thus banning E fic) and put up its first ad it shouldn’t’ve been trusted as a fandom site. It also isn’t fair because it doesn’t allow RPF.

If you’re going to count FF.net then count AdultFF too since they go hand in hand with the FF.net crowd.

It’s all just legacy rules for legacy’s sake and I don’t see the point. This Ao3 where they moved to. Base it on Ao3 or keep up with all the new sites instead of acting like FF.net matters.

/has no fandoms active on FF.net, all my fandoms are so small I don’t even bother checking there, and would gain nothing from having it removed. I’m an immigrant in America who is anti-2nd amendment too. Sometime old rules that made sense a while back just need to fucking go. The mods look stupid for keeping it up because that’s how it’s been when they have a history of changing shit willy nilly anyway!

Forget pettiness, how is it not explicitly against policy? How can she just decide by fiat that some fandoms don't get wrangled, even with posted fics??

Re: FFN

I care, and my reasoning has nothing to do with what the "right" measure is for eligibility. I just find the ff.net interface fucking annoying and hate checking two places.

If you use the wrong-fandom trick to see if a character you want is already nominated, don't forget to change the fandom back.

(Sailor Moon anime and manga wouldn't classify for Yuletide even if only AO3 counted.)
