I looked because of the sheer WTF factor of Lion King fic set in America, but apparently it's an even smaller fandom dedicated to a specific tumblr gifset.

Black Panther straight up did plot of live action Lion King (not mad about it; love that movie) with an original political message and it seems like this fic is (tongue-in cheek? I haven’t read it) is having Lion King pull the same thing by using BP’s message?

If the fic is for an AU that's specifically oriented around "these characters but involved in the black civil rights movement", I don't think that's the same thing as fic for just The Lion King generically, or even a modern-set canon without a civil rights focus dropping this kind of content in there. The execution sounds clumsy, but it would be weird for Mufasa to not be aware of racial injustice in that context or specifically how it's going to impact his son as a young black man in America.

There is more to the animal kingdom, Susan. Humans are animals too, and within the construct of original Lion King, they can fuck over the kingly lion just fine by being one step up on the food chain. When you make black!lions into humans, white supremacist power structures would be the next step on the food chain fucking them over, as well as actual white people being the oppressor.

Anyway, someone can be the top of their community or subculture that is itself positioned lowly within the larger culture. Look at how how many civil rights leaders ended up imprisoned, dead, their government actively working to undermine them. Not all power needs to look the same, be expressed the same, position its holder as the universal emperor without social complexity.

(esp because I've read some of the novel, and there's nothing that says repressed sexuality more than stalking your reincarnated crush across the ages.) I'm the recip, I asked for no issuefic, and none of the story read as issuefic to me --i love it to pieces for the vivid setting and the take the bull by the horns approach to racial injustice and life as an activist at for racial Justice in the fic took. It reminds me rather a lot of "the Watsons Go to Birmingham", which I read recently and also loved. My only complaint is that I had to periodically mentally replace "flat" with "apartment"".

.... coalie. The Watsons Go To Birmingham is a moralistic children's book. It's a decent moralistic children's book, but it is literally a moralistic children's book. I just double-checked. Penguin has it listed for 8-12 year olds. Is that your standard of sophistication for books about Black people?

I mean, like your gift! That's great! I think there's things to recommend about a parable-like approach to telling these stories. But it's weird to praise it for the vividness and specificity of its approach to the setting and it's weird to set up a "first novel for young readers" as the standard of a good story about the period.
