If the fic is for an AU that's specifically oriented around "these characters but involved in the black civil rights movement", I don't think that's the same thing as fic for just The Lion King generically, or even a modern-set canon without a civil rights focus dropping this kind of content in there. The execution sounds clumsy, but it would be weird for Mufasa to not be aware of racial injustice in that context or specifically how it's going to impact his son as a young black man in America.

But the lions are the ones in power, if anything the hyenas would be the oppressed group. Making the literal king the poor oppressed one sure is a choice.

There is more to the animal kingdom, Susan. Humans are animals too, and within the construct of original Lion King, they can fuck over the kingly lion just fine by being one step up on the food chain. When you make black!lions into humans, white supremacist power structures would be the next step on the food chain fucking them over, as well as actual white people being the oppressor.

Ithink you're mildly missing the right tone here, trollie. You don't quite have a facility with the language. It would be much more natural to say "talking about anti-Blackness" (no hits on google for "talking about anti-Bllack issues," over 2k for "talking about anti-Blackness.") That also feels like a slightly off use of the word "swerve." It's not a swerve to tone police, it's entirely predictable. It'd be a swerve if they were pro the fic and then was like, "because it reveals all Black people are seditious" or whatever. You still get 6/10 for me, because going hard for the lions is a great wank maneuver. (If a bit reminiscent of channers thinking all Afrocentricism is ridiculous, but I'll allow it)

There is in the canon this is based off of.

If it was a Lion King fic human AU based in an Africa where the squabbling of the richest, most attractive royals was seen as oppression then the anon would have a point. But the lions as black people in 60s civil rights area America != kings being oppressed.

I think cyrt was replying to the "Your comment is literally why they had to make the lion king about lions instead of black people in the first place" part, which does appear to be about the original Lion King about lions and not the 60s civil rights AU.

I have no stake in this wank, but the idea of a Lion King human AU makes me crack up considering Lion King is essentially a Hamlet AU where the characters are animals.

You might want to go and watch The Lion King again, Karen. There are no humans. The lions are at the top of the foodchain. There is no system fucking them over.

A younger brother was pissy because he'd never be king, so he schemed to have his brother murdered. It's inter-family strive.

The only ones who might be oppressed and/or fucked over by the system are the hyenas. You know, the ugly, mean, stupid, thieving, cowardly criminals.

I'd also point out that The Lion King is just an all-animals AU retelling of Hamlet.

The plot of the Lion King is nothing like the plot of Hamlet, though, except in the very basic uncle killed dad way.

Anyway, someone can be the top of their community or subculture that is itself positioned lowly within the larger culture. Look at how how many civil rights leaders ended up imprisoned, dead, their government actively working to undermine them. Not all power needs to look the same, be expressed the same, position its holder as the universal emperor without social complexity.
