My friend got caught doing that and weaseled her way out of a ban by pretending to have made a mistake then laughed at the mods for falling for it.

Meanwhile, a friend of mine posted a story that was just over 1000 words, then edited it and didn't realized it had fallen belown (by like, 5 words), and had to write NYR as "punishment". IDK man.

Yes, not disputing that, I'm commenting on the fact that my friend who made a mistake and was honest about it did not get a reprieve, while the friend of the Coalie I was replying to was rewarded for dishonesty.

I mean if your friend called it "punishment" when they were asked to write a story to participate again, which was a clear if somewhat inflexible result of a situation they were responsible for (uploading something that wasn't a full gift), then I am guessing they were similarly indignant when replying to the mods, and someone lying to your face but at least admitting that there was a problem might leave a better impression than that.

I mean, yeah, being able to lie convincingly often gets you out of situations where admitting the truth will get you in trouble. That's not really surprising or unusual?

That does seem unfair given that a lot of people get mod warnings for small mistakes like that these days and a chance to fix them no problem.

But the mods usually do those checks right after posting deadline. If you're editing after that you're accepting you're working without a safety line, by choice.

(The nyr isn't meant primarily as "punishment" though, it's meant as proof to both yourself and the mods that you're actually capable of writing a yt-qualifying story.)

Yes, and since you can search the collection for works shorter than 1,000 words, the mods probably do check under-wordcount works right away.

IDK, when I upload a fic, it's my responsibility to make sure it's all there and appropriate, same with making sure it isn't about my recipient's DNWs. If the work was too short after the deadline, then I wouldn't assume the author was going to fix it on their own, because they didn't notice the problem in the first place.

It could have gone a lot of different ways depending on how long coalie's friend took to respond and the tone of their reply.
