Re: Mod Cabal

Am I the only one here who'd prefer a mod crowdsourcing for my EPH rather than taking a decision while not even being able to actually read the gift?

Granted, what EO did was shitty and if I heard about it I would block and DNM, but I'd still prefer that over "Well, this squicks all of us in different ways but let's still make a judgement call on that on our own".

I had to ask for an EPH twice and ngl I didn't much care who knew why as long as I could get the mod to make a decision.

I think most people are not against asking for advice, but instead are eager to wank about EO, the tone of the comments, the fact that enough info was included that a determined person could find the fic, the secret mod discord existing at all, etc etc. And some people are just wanking for love of the game. Nobody is saying you shouldn't crowdsource help for an EPH in a difficult situation.

yup. you can crowdsource, but you ask for that neutrally, then you dm the details, neutrally, to 2-3 people. i guess you can also later be a dick in those dms and nobody will know, so it's good for the mods who love a good mocking as well.

Does the mod not have any non exchange friends they can ask? I know when I modded an exchange, if I was squicked or triggered by a gift’s content, at least one of my comods wouldn’t be.

You're telling me you'd rather a mod go to some rando to show your email requests and decide if your gift warrants an EPH than other experienced exchange mods on the mod server designed for this kind of question? I would prefer my request go to people who know what they're doing, not your bestie who turns out to hate my OTP and everyone who ships it.

Yes? The mod is vetting the “rando,” they can’t vet the whole server, who clearly are not all fully equipped for this.

You have such faith in the mod's ability to vet.

Well, there’s a better chance of them getting a response from someone who’s good to answer if they’re vetting them personally than if they go to this server, apparently.

Yeah, personal I'd actually rather have one possible idiot from the mod's friend list read my fic than have the whole cabal of highly experienced mean girls debate over it in their den.

I'd prefer a mod who could actually read something as predictable as underage/ age gap incest in an incest exchange personally.

(Also I love how there's been a campaign to bring back "squick" as an alternative to "trigger" to mean "I think it's yucky but I don't judge and I can read it if I must" and yet in this convo everyone's treating squick to mean "absolutely can't read and must be very judgey". There's stuff that squicks me and I wouldn't enjoy it. But I am capable of doing things that make me a bit uncomfortable and I'm pretty sure I would still be able to impartially skim-read to figure out if it's character bashing and just a rephrase of the prompt. This is just the mod being immature about a thing they voluntarily signed up to have to read.)

I'd go so far as to say you shouldn't be modding an exchange if common fandom topics trigger you so severely that you can't read or engage with them at all.

I was wondering when the ableism would kick in.

The 3 As: antisemitism, ableism, and ??? We almost have the trinity of trolling false flags!

Transphobia doesn't start with A, but that's been tossed around as an accusation.

Being a fanfic exchange mod is not a human right.
