I don't care about fishspeakers, but in general, announcing "I will write the gift for you while intoxicated" is just like any other statement that you can't be bothered to devote all of your attention on the gift. IMO, it's no different from "I wrote this is class" or "I wrote this while sick and completely out of it" or "I dashed this off on my phone in the supermarket queue". If you don't have time or aren't in the proper state to actually give writing a gift fic your entire attention so that it's the best gift it can be, then default. Or at least don't announce that you can't/don't want to give it all your attention to the whole world and the recip - maybe they'll never know, if the fic is decent enough. (This is also true for "I didn't consume the canon". Like, don't ever tell your recip you didn't respect them and their request enough to do all the work.)

As far as I saw, fishspeakers has talked in different times about writing on mushrooms, writing after taking her ADHD meds (for the purpose of writing) and writing for a PH after watching only the first half of a movie. Those are all things I would not want to know about my author, even if they can be harmless.
