There's no rules saying where you can and can't talk about what kind of stuff you'd like to see in your gift.

If it's not linked in your sign-up, it's not an official "letter" and everyone will just laugh at you if you complain your recip ignored it (and it doesn't count for official-rules stuff like the IF rule) but nobody's going to stop you. The app and spreadsheet aren't official, so it's up to them what they include.

Floranna - feels like Orube forced in by yuletide rules and not really wanted - they only had to request one character though, so I don't understand their requests. Maybe they really do want an ensemble OR their fave.

I think it's different if the mods ask you for details because your author wants them, vs. an author who probably isn't even checking their email and is expecting to go on what was first provided.

I just want us to stop talking about this canon here. We don't have to!

Blank sign-up? I do canon review and brainstorm. Sometimes I look at other/past requests for the same canon for loose inspiration.

Blank sign-up? Write whatever the heck I want. If I'm stuck, browse for other sign-ups in the fandom or stalk their AO3 bookmarks or something for something that sparks an idea.

Blank sign-up that links to blank letter? Wait two weeks post-assignments to see if one appears, then do the above.

Sign-up with usable ODs but no letter/placeholder letter? Go by what's in the sign-up, ignore the existence of letters.

Assuming no optional details either, if it was my assignment I would write them a canon-typical gen adventure/casefic/wacky comedy situation as appropriate. Fortunately I'm always happy writing that sort of thing so it wouldn't be a hardship, though it would be frustrating if it was a fandom I'd written several times before where I was hoping for someone else to provide new ideas.

I wouldn't treat a blank signup, though; it would feel a bit too much like making a shameless grab for Yuletide eyeballs on a fic I could have written any time rather than a tailored gift, plus while I'm not generally all that fussed about who most "deserves" treats (I usually have too few options I can write to be that discerning) I'd at least prefer to write for someone invested enough to go to the bare minimum effort of writing one-line prompts, even if they're just, "I would love anything in this fandom!"

I’m the coalie who almost signed up for a movie I hadn’t seen at the deadline, then watched it and was glad I hadn’t, and that movie was Barbie. I was already wondering why so damn much of the movie revolved around Ken (a big mistake imo) and then most people want fic about him instead? Feels like everyone is unintentionally proving like, the most basic point here.

Aw, one of those last two is my newbie friend who wouldn't let me hand-hold her through the form and (imo) kinda needed it. She will comment, I'll make sure of that.

I'm both satisfied with Barbie's arc in the movie and uninterested in reading a random writer's take on feminism, therefore I'm not looking for fic about Barbie. On the other hand, the movie did not include Ken making out with Ken, so I would like to read about that.

I think that depends on how any one person feels about how straight up stupid the models were, the tragic gasoline fight accident insensitive, if the “crazy pills” line counts as ableist, is the short Sherpa orgy demeaning or not, does it make fun of miner’s lung, is Mugatu Bad Gay Rep or whatever?

But there aren’t people shitting en mass, the guys just really don’t understand what it means for files to be INSIDE the COMPUTER

because writing women is clearly always about the writer trying to make a point on feminism, right? nobody does so simply because they enjoy it.
