I had a ridiculous OTP of 2 incredibly minor characters in a big for Yuletide fandom - such minor characters that there were no existing fanworks about them. But my writer wrote the most amazing pitch perfect fic that managed to work as both case fic featuring all the fandom faves and also a really satisfying love story for my OTP.

I was sooooo excited and creatively jazzed and hyped up to gift somebody I wanted to be friends with in my tiny fandom... that is, to gift them an unrequested crossover with a work they were not remotely familiar with. They were really gracious but I was so embarrassing.

I found a letter to treat that loved exactly what I loved about the fandom and ship. I got to write them a 10k+ shippy plotty fic like I'd always wanted to write for Yuletide, and after I posted I realized it was only the second fic the recip had ever received over 5k, in many years of doing exchanges (that appeared in their AO3 gifts page, at least). And they loved it! Perfect Yuletide experience, no notes.

I completely do not see how you are inferring this. The mods say, if you don't link your letter in the signup, your signup won't have a letter. I don't see anywhere that they say that you can't make a letter and link it in the app even if you haven't linked it in the signup.

You don’t get to decide what does and doesn’t skim a DNW. Ask through the mod if you think it’s that important or leave it out.

You may think a dead pet means you can have an evil dog-like creature, but it could still remind them of their dog. At “best” they’re quietly upset, at worst you’re reported to the mods and potentially banned.

Thinking you know better than a recip (regardless of any level of detail you get) when it comes to DNWs makes you an asshole and bad gift writer.

Wow, two replies here that go in opposite wrong directions. Coalie, if "no dogs" means you can't mention the canonical spider-bear monster without checking in first, there's no point in DNWs at all because you'd have to check in for everything.
