What's good? What's bad?

I liked both of the interactive fiction fics in the collection this year.

The Fallen London one weirded me out -- it seems to boot you through all three possible streams, eh?

I have read 4 fics this year: two of them wank fics from last post, which were very bad. One gift for me, which was very good. And one fic in an old fandom of mine, which was very good.

I should read more, probably.

In theory you can write whatever for a blank signup, but in practice maybe writing a fic entirely about a character's non-canonical eating disorder is a bad plan. Looks like the recip got a treat they liked, so that's good at least.

I guess it's possible to extrapolate from the fact that the character canonically got a nose job as a teen that she's concerned about appearance to an unhealthy degree and the eating disorder isn't too much of a stretch, but yeah, this is in poor taste.

The recip seemed to like it, though, so I guess it didn't bother them.

Compare the comment on that to the comment on the other fic they got. They were very much being polite.

Yeah, they clearly loved the other fic, and they didn't have as much to say about this one. I hadn't compared. But I also think it's fine to say more about fics you love most and less about ones you like (I don't think everybody needs to try to make their comments equal across gifts, because it's okay to like some things more than you like others.)

In this case, you're probably right. Especially since the recip says "thank you?" with the actual question mark. I wonder if that was a typo.

Oh, you're right! I misread

I like the voice and details of a YT fic, and I'd like to rec it to other people...but it has too many typos right now for me to feel good about directing more eyeballs and more scrutiny toward it.

Maybe I'll check back in a week and see if the author has fixed all the weird little errors?

I'm only partway through the Project Hail Mary fics, but they've all been really good so far!

Still baffled by the one Ghost Trick fic whose author apparently forgot that

an undead cat wouldn't have to eat, let alone go to the vet for drinking brownie water.

It's a great fic! The premise just makes no sense.

I haven't read the fic, but I dunno, I can roll with an undead cat still eating and drinking stupid things. The vet trip, yeah, maybe unnecessary, but maybe the owner panicked and forgot about the undeath?

He's had the cat for 10 years. It is his partner who has no idea about the whole "ghost cat possessing his own indestructible body" thing who's taking him to the vet, but he also has annual checkups, apparently???

Is it ever canonically established that Sissel or Yomiel can't taste things post-mortem? (I'm trying to remember if this gets established in the Chicken Kitchen or something, but I don't recall it ever coming up in the game.) The ghosts in Ghost Trick are pretty lulzy; the idea that Sissel is still doing pointless-but-enjoyable cat stuff after resurrection feels like the kind of idea that would make Shu Takumi smile. It's like the antithesis of Pet Sematary or "came back wrong."

(Other parts of that particular story break my suspension of disbelief, but not the Sissel-eating-things part.)
