Giving unrequested trans!fic is a dick move IMO, the same as other unrequested sexuality headcanons.

So, do you think slash is opt in or opt out, then?

"If a character has not stated that they're straight then we can't assume they're not bi+" is equivalent to "if a character hasn't stated that they're cisgender we can't assume they're not some flavor of trans"

Or if the standard is all characters played by cis actors are cis until proven otherwise? Is not a standard applied to slash.

If someone requests het then yeah, writing them slash is a dick move.

No one is saying that you can't write fic about trans headcanons, but if you sign up for an exchange you do agree to write a fic that will make someone else happy, even if that means you can't write your fave headcanons.

I see that sort of complaining a lot in EAD by the people who say that they haven't written non-exchange fics in 2 years or more, and I think their fandom experience sort of got skewed by that. If someone DNWs their fave headcanon, they feel like someone is actively campaigning to suppress the existence of transfic, because writing exchange fic is their only fandom activity at this point, which they spend all their writing time on. But if your entire writing activity is centered around writing fic tailored towards a stranger's likes, then it is par for the course that you will not get to write your own headcanons most of the time.

I do 4 exchanges per year and 90% of what I post is non-exchange fic. If I get a request match that DNWs my fave headcanons, I shrug and write them what they want and then return to writing my own fic for myself outside of exchanges.

I think there's a big difference between a request that DNWs trans characters and one that doesn't say one way or the other. Cis is not the default gender - I don't think trans characters are opt-in. But if someone opts out then of course I'd respect that.

The default is the canon gender and sexuality, as presented by the text/show or generally understood by the audience/readers. Unless someone says they're open to changing the gender or sexuality of their requested characters or they specifically request it, canon should be the default not headcanons

This thread is literally about that type of request so you didn't really explain why this is a "dick move."

Re: Oops

No this thread is about requests that don't specify either way, some people think that means it's ok to change a character's gender or sexuality, most think that's a dick move

Re: Oops

The request was literally for girl!Character, which means it was a request to change a character's gender??? So changing the character's gender is not a dick move??

Eh, opinions vary on that. I also think going with a trans headcanon is not in the spirit of the request, whether or not the requester thought to dwn it.

I think part of the problem is when people approach exchanges with an idea of what they want to write as the priority, then feeling put out when that isn't what their match wants, which can be exacerbated by what you talked about with people who seem to only write for exchanges. Gift fic writing is about creating something that'll make your recipient happy, so this kind of rules lawyering over what you can or can't write leaves a bad taste, as it makes it very clear that the priority for writers making those arguments is writing what they want and fuck the recipient, and if writing their headcanons is their priority over making their recipient happy, then maybe they shouldn't do exchanges.

We're talking about exchange fic, if canon has a character exclusively in het relationships you don't give a fic that's slash or femslash unless the requester asks for it specifically or says they're okay with that, if they're presented as cis then you write them as cis unless the recipient says they want or are ok with having the character written as trans.

If you write slash and have a canonically married-to-a-woman dude say that he DOES NOT AND NEVER DID like women, yes, it is a dick move. There is a difference between reading between the lines and explicitly going against canon - the second is opt in

sa *to clarify, a dick move unless it was requested that way
