COALTIDE Episode IV: A New Hope

It is a period of indecision.
Gaming gone right for some,
coalies successfully snagging
the assignment they wanted,
the first major hurdle against
Yuletide odds is a victory.

However for those not as lucky
to have gotten the recipient they
wanted, coalies can't help but
think about the hidden requests,
missed bullet and gem alike,
they now have to wait months
to get access to.

Haunted by these assignments that
could have been, or perhaps
mourning the gaming attempt that
went awry, coalies tell themselves
that they will get started on their
assignment right away so that they can
treat to their hearts content and
restore happiness to the Yuletide galaxy....

I got the Nightmare Assignment. This is what I get for offering Any.

Preference Rating Game

Finally!

1. Reply to this comment with a fandom that has more than one request
2. Coalies will look at all the requests/letters. You don't have to be in that fandom to play.
3. Sort them in sequential order from "would like to treat the most' to 'would be least likely to treat'
4. Optional: say why you rated them where you did, aka "I like no prompts", "I don't write gen", "These prompts instantly inspired me", etc

The point of the game isn't to be mean, but to show the variety of what people look for when treating.

Oh coalie. I guess we all have to relearn the dangers of Any every so often.

Of the 8 people I could have matched to, only 1 was a wildcard with no letter posted.

Guess which assignment I got.

(And it's bad, coal. It's real bad.)

My assignment is true neutral. I can write something solid for it and it will not engage my brain whatsoever. So I'll get that done and then go hunting for treats to write. This will either be a very prolific year or one where I knock out my assignment by the beginning of November and forget about Yuletide altogether til it goes live.

My assignment is a resounding meh.

Matched a person I've treated multiple times, whose id and mine are basically identical, on multiple fandoms! This is going to be a fantastic Yuletide.

My recip has no optional details, no letter, and no social media. The fandom we matched on is the hardest one I offered and will take the most time to write, most likely precluding treats. I've never heard of the other fandoms they requested but they're both looooong. Doesn't even look like they comment on their gifts. And they must have signed up in the three hours before signups closed, after I checked on this fandom specifically to be sure all requests had letters.

Although obviously we won't be able to look at all the requests for a day or two yet.

I did no gaming (to the point of virtuously avoiding looking at the app or letters before I did my sign-up)...and my assignment is clear and well-written, with lots of thoughtful and varied prompts about a very obscure fandom for which I will thoroughly enjoy doing canon review. Sad high five. This is worse than my nightmare assignment.

Yep, I'm looking forward to doing this one once requests are public.

Don't know the fandom.

1. othersideofthis: I don't actually think this letter is technically better than the ones below it, but something like a modern au for a historical canon is the type of thing I would jump at and no one else seems to be looking for anything interesting like this (although there isn't anything wrong with canon compliant fic, I just wish the other letters had an interesting take or seemed like they were open to interesting takes). Even though I prefer longer letters and more prompts, this one kind of makes me want to try getting into the fandom to treat them because I could write something really interesting. It really just takes one standout prompt/likes list combination for me to be a stand out letter.

2. minebyrights: Normally this would be the letter I'm all over but the prompts left me feeling a bit meh. I liked the likes and DNWs. This letter feels like it would be great for a fanartist but as an author I probably wouldn't get over 3k. Their prompts are easy to write, I can see that even without knowing the movie, but it doesn't make me want to draw anything out or get into their fandom to make it happen. This is probably the letter I would be the most happy to match to because it would be a stress free assignment since the prompts are so clear even if they don't make me want to run out and watch the movie. This would be the one I would be most likely to treat if I was in the fandom because it would be a cakewalk, but it isn't enough to make me want to get into the canon to write for it.

2. idan: Solid likes and DNWs. The prompts left something to be desired but I feel like their "why I like" section works really well to fill in what they don't prompt and the questions brought up answers that I was able to fill in based on their varied likes. Might treat if I was in the fandom, but not enough to get me in the fandom. Wouldn't mind getting it as an assignment.

2. rhovanel: Not exciting, but not bad. I wouldn't mind matching to this letter but it doesn't grab me enough that I feel like I need to treat it or I'll have regrets for missing my chance. Solid likes that work well with the prompts and the DNWs are fine. I kind of wish they had a prompt leaning into the myth aspect because that would be the type of thing that would grab me and make me watch their canon and treat. As it is, having it in there as a mention may work for someone who knows the canon already. Might treat if I was in the fandom, but not enough to get me in the fandom.

3. girlmarauders: Not a fan of this letters format. It isn't a dealbreaker but likes and DNWs at the end always throw me off. I don't that they only really have one prompt, but I do like that they give multiple options for the post-canon ending that would be interesting and in character for them. The most useful thing to me is actually their last paragraph about the film. The likes and DNWs are fine. Wouldn't treat. Would probably be a little let down if it was my assignment.

1. it's a wanky person I don't like very much

2. the very scant details are basically 'I like these characters, write whatever you want!' which is 100% unhelpful

Idk, I guess it could be worse. They could be super demanding or have wanky anti-ish requests. My dislike for the recip is really colouring my opinion here, plus I'm someone who really prefers having at least something to go on for an assignment.

All requests don't go live until the default deadline, right?

Not anymore. Now they go live once all initial PHs are picked up.

I'm rereading my recip's letter and I wish there was more in the way of prompts and what ships they're into. It's all just vague mentions of they love the feel of the show and either ships or gen is fine, they want to read the story I'm inspired to write.

I already have an idea I really like (and I've gotten way worse assignments), but I guess I'll have to go looking for treats to write the fic of someone's dreams.
