COALTIDE Episode IV: A New Hope

It is a period of indecision.
Gaming gone right for some,
coalies successfully snagging
the assignment they wanted,
the first major hurdle against
Yuletide odds is a victory.

However for those not as lucky
to have gotten the recipient they
wanted, coalies can't help but
think about the hidden requests,
missed bullet and gem alike,
they now have to wait months
to get access to.

Haunted by these assignments that
could have been, or perhaps
mourning the gaming attempt that
went awry, coalies tell themselves
that they will get started on their
assignment right away so that they can
treat to their hearts content and
restore happiness to the Yuletide galaxy....

Of the 8 people I could have matched to, only 1 was a wildcard with no letter posted.

My assignment is true neutral. I can write something solid for it and it will not engage my brain whatsoever. So I'll get that done and then go hunting for treats to write. This will either be a very prolific year or one where I knock out my assignment by the beginning of November and forget about Yuletide altogether til it goes live.

My assignment is a resounding meh.

Matched a person I've treated multiple times, whose id and mine are basically identical, on multiple fandoms! This is going to be a fantastic Yuletide.

My recip has no optional details, no letter, and no social media. The fandom we matched on is the hardest one I offered and will take the most time to write, most likely precluding treats. I've never heard of the other fandoms they requested but they're both looooong. Doesn't even look like they comment on their gifts. And they must have signed up in the three hours before signups closed, after I checked on this fandom specifically to be sure all requests had letters.

I did no gaming (to the point of virtuously avoiding looking at the app or letters before I did my sign-up)...and my assignment is clear and well-written, with lots of thoughtful and varied prompts about a very obscure fandom for which I will thoroughly enjoy doing canon review. (gloat gloat gloat)

I'm rereading my recip's letter and I wish there was more in the way of prompts and what ships they're into. It's all just vague mentions of they love the feel of the show and either ships or gen is fine, they want to read the story I'm inspired to write.

I already have an idea I really like (and I've gotten way worse assignments), but I guess I'll have to go looking for treats to write the fic of someone's dreams.

Was assigned someone who signed up at the very last minute, without much of a letter and no prompts. However, they are enthusiastically open to all kinds of things, and I’m looking forward to the canon review.

I got the assignment I wanted, but now that I have it, I wish this letter gave me a little bit more to work with. I'll probably give it a week or two, do a canon review, then work from there. And if that doesn't work, they have a five-minute fandom I could get into, so still definitely a step up from last year.

I got a pretty bare bones sign up but luckily the one prompt already has my wheels turning.

Matched on two totally random characters that don't interact in canon. Have already hatched a scheme to get them to fuck. (This fits the parameters of the request, to be clear.)

It's a pretty good one, on the whole, although I'm starting to brainstorm and having this sinking feeling that I might need to do a lot of research. Like, "refresh myself on the whole canon, dig into the fan wikis, and then see what fanfic is already out there so I don't just write someone else's story again" research. I like this canon and this assignment, but oh boy, is it going to be a long dither-with-details Yuletide.

I'm actually very pleased and excited!

Letter had lots of prompts for the three fandoms i didn't match on and can't write, with a coming soon comment under the matched fandom. Going by the coming soon notes on previous letters that never got updated I'm not holding my breath

I got a very specific prompt and that's it. I like part of it, but might have to ODOA the rest.

It's one of the better assignments I've had, to be honest. The question is whether I can pull it off.

I hit the jackpot! Got my most wanted fandom and several adjacent fandoms!

I keep getting the same recipient in different fandoms. Our tastes just overlap too much, I guess.

I deleted my sign-up at the last minute and I'm still not sure if I made the right decision. Eh.

i gamed to get a letter i wanted and could easily see myself writing a fic for all of the requested fandoms

I took a bit of a risk in offering a canon I am meh about but could write, in order to make me matchable to someone with a request I really want to write, in a fandom with two people I really didn't want to be matched to.

It paid off.

Very happy.

My assignment is completely manageable: not too specific letter and prompts, but perfectly fine for the canon and character I matched on. Also, I have 4k of an abandoned WIP draft sitting on my harddrive that I can definitely clean up and adjust to one of my recipient's prompts if I can't come up with anything new.

Got an assignment I don't really know what to do with yet, but they seem neat and wrote me one of my bizzaro yuletide requests a few years back so I'll write them the fic of their dreams if it takes me the rest of the year.
