I've got some Audible credits I need to spend! I'd prefer one-off books in sci-fi/fantasy or historical. Other audio-y titles I've liked: The Sparrow, Children of Time. Potential for M/M or really rich worldbuilding are both good bonuses.

Rivers of London by Ben Aaronovitch is my favorite audiobook series! The narrator is Peter Grant, a young black constable in modern-day London who accidentally interviews a ghost at a murder scene and gets recruited into the top-secret magic policing department of the London Met. Well, apprenticed to the sole member of said department.

The characters are brilliant and the world-building is exquisite, showing a hidden world right under the surface of the one we see every day. I love the fact that Peter finds out that the world is full of fey, witches, river spirits, etc, and rather than seeing them as threats he views them as part of the community it's his duty to protect.

+1 on this rec, and I'd add that there's great m/m potential for the main character and his mentor (but also a canon het relationship, if that's a dealbreaker for OP).

OP

I do indeed love RoL, but am asking for one-offs since I don't have enough time to catch up on series :)

Does this series stay good right through or does it start to drop off? I've had it on my TBR list for ages (bonus: one of my favourite audiobook narrators) but I've been cursed by declining series too many times to risk another!

Depends on who you ask!
Some people are less interested in the canon love interest and the broadening of scope/character focus over the course of the series. I enjoyed the most recent installment as much as the earlier books, personally, and while I’ve enjoyed some individual books more or less than others, I haven’t noticed any real trends, just some ups and downs as with any series.

It's hard to answer that objectively. The scope of the series changes (while there is always a clear main character, the cast becomes MUCH bigger, which can be disappointing if you're interested in the smaller core cast from the beginning) - some people enjoy this, others don't. The later books also have a serious relationship plus baby for the main character (whereas the first books were relatively romance-free - the main character was attracted to and slept with people, but wasn't in a serious relationship until book ... 6, I think?) - again, some people enjoy this relationship, others don't.

I wouldn't say it's a decline in quality so much as a change in focus, which you might or might not be interested in (and I say that as someone who is very much NOT interested in the things the later books focus on, but I still think the earlier books are worth reading/listening to).
