If you're interested in BL, I compiled a list of the Thai/Korean/Taiwanese BLs in the tag list with a short description and where to find them: https://justpaste.it/30rf2

The Exorcist TV show: Marcus Keane/Peter Osborne, both of whom are in their 50s. Marcus is an exorcist who was recently stripped of his priesthood. He's bisexual (having been shown exanging flirtatious looks with a man in a bar in season 1, and was once in love with a woman without consummating that relationship, for complicated reasons, many years earlier), but is only now really getting the chance to explore his sexuality, since he no's no longer bound by vows of chastity that he'd kept for over 40 years (debatably making him still a virgin), having dedicated his entire life to the Catholic Church and fighting demons after a traumatic childhood. Peter is a gentle, funny Fish & Wildlife Service biologist and military vet and total silver fox who is really into Marcus and doesn't flinch when Marcus's trauma surfaces.

This is their first kiss:

The Boys In The Band (2020) is a film that was recently released on Netflix! (That was originally a play, then a film, then a revival play, and now this film.) It features nine (or eight, depending on your opinion about one character) gay men attending a birthday party for their friend in New York City in the year 1968. It starts out fun, but the whole thing spirals as they decide to play a party game. (Potential TW for self-loathing and period-appropriate homophobia/slurs.) There's one canon pair that is struggling between being monogamous or being an open relationship, there's one canon pair that hooked up once and maybe desire to do so again, and one canon pair that are codependent and definitely used to hook up. Plus Matt Bomer gets naked so that's always fun.

Canons with interesting villains that people are likely to want fic about! TV and movies preferred but standalone books are welcome too.

I've already seen one Knives Out (2019) letter that wanted to know more about the villain's backstory. (It's a murder mystery, so I won't spoil it.)

If you're into dark edgy canons, The Boys (TV) has several options for this, in which the super'hero' characters are immoral, murderous, bigoted, and/or would do anything for fame or power. The evil Superman expy Homelander is a black hole of terribleness and instability, which can be fascinating to watch.

+1 for The Boys. I think you'll see a lot of Crueltide requests that would be right up your alley. Canon's got a great, 'The heroes are villains and the villains are heroes' vibe. Only with a whole extra layer of moral ambiguity thrown in for good measure.

If you're into horror canons, Channel Zero: The Dream Door has a villain who has an incestuous obsession with the heroine, with whom he shares a rare superpower.

Christina from Lovecraft Country, who has magic powers, can shape-shift into a man, and has a canonical female love interest.

I've got some Audible credits I need to spend! I'd prefer one-off books in sci-fi/fantasy or historical. Other audio-y titles I've liked: The Sparrow, Children of Time. Potential for M/M or really rich worldbuilding are both good bonuses.

Rivers of London by Ben Aaronovitch is my favorite audiobook series! The narrator is Peter Grant, a young black constable in modern-day London who accidentally interviews a ghost at a murder scene and gets recruited into the top-secret magic policing department of the London Met. Well, apprenticed to the sole member of said department.

The characters are brilliant and the world-building is exquisite, showing a hidden world right under the surface of the one we see every day. I love the fact that Peter finds out that the world is full of fey, witches, river spirits, etc, and rather than seeing them as threats he views them as part of the community it's his duty to protect.

+1 on this rec, and I'd add that there's great m/m potential for the main character and his mentor (but also a canon het relationship, if that's a dealbreaker for OP).

악녀는 모래시계를 되돌린다 - 산소비 | The Villainess Reverses the Hourglass - SanSobee (Manhwa)

Unlike most "villain" manga/manwha/etc, the main character is at least somewhat villainous. Aria returns to the past after getting excecuted and proceeds to manipulate people (and get revenge).

She routinely humiliates her younger step-sister, who will be evil in a few years but at present is only 11-years old and thus not clever enough to see through Aria's schemes.

She makes her step-sister's fiance fall in love with her, even though she has no intention of marrying him herself (she'll likely end up with the prince). The poor man is actually nice but weak and under the control of his older sister (who slaps him!).

She manipulates a friendly, gentle girl into becoming her mentor, because she knows the older girl will in a few years meet and marry a duke.

One maid used to manipulate her the first time around, so she routinely beats and insults her (while simultaneously treating her other two maids extremely well and bribing them with jewels and such).

Obviously as the main character, Aria is still positioned as "in the right" as far as that goes - in her first life, her step-sister bullied her and finally got her excecuted on fake charges. But! The villainy is pretty fun. And the art is gorgeous!

I'm looking for canons that meet the following criteria:

Chinese, Japanese, or Korean
Live action
M/M, those sanitized danmei adaptations, or something with a lot of subtext where requests will be m/m or m/m/f
Historical w/ political intrigue, mystery/crime, and/or fantasy/magic/ghosts/monsters

DNW: canons with a tragic tone, canons where the nominated character(s) died and stayed dead, slice of life or plain drama type genres

I just started watching The Sleuth of the Ming Dynasty, and I love it so far. History 3: Trapped was fun, but I'd have preferred a bit more arc plot or crime solving and a bit less super goofy humor. I loved Kingdom (the historical Korean zombie show, which is not BL at all), but I didn't ship anything enough to request fic for it.

Nirvana in Fire is excellent historical political intrigue with a lot of slash potential! Most of the nominated characters stay alive.

You might like Love Is More than a Word. It's a censored gay cdrama, historical, 12 episodes long. About a newly appointed magistrate who's illiterate and a little bit clueless (but with not-bad instincts) and the hot genius scholar in town he makes friends with. Mysteries are investigated and cases judged. Some of it is goofy humor, though, and a lot of the plot is Gu She and Tao Mo being romantic but not quite romantic. And the ending's a bit of a cliffhanger.

Alternatively, maybe Ancient Detective. As the title suggests, it's about a detective wandering the jianghu. He's trying to solve a case involving his dead father. Along the way he acquires some trusty companions and solves a few other cases. It's not an actual censored gay romance, but Jian Buzhi and Zhao Wohuan do have a lot of sexual tension imo. It is 24 episodes.

Both are up on Youtube I believe, and Ancient Detective is also available on Viki.

It's Vietnamese, but I have a feeling that the Tự Tâm music videos might be relevant to your interests? Historical fantasy with a m/m/f love triangle that piles on the twists, accompanied by good visuals and production values.

There *is* character death and there is a tragic tone to it, but it's a type of canon where that's easily worked around because there's canon resurrection, and... reincarnation & time travel OR dimension travel(??), depending on your interpretation.

It'd probably be hard to get through the entire game before sign-ups close, but Assassin's Creed Odyssey! It's set in Ancient Greece during the Peloponnesian War, though like most video games it plays fast and loose with actual history (so you shouldn't expect amazing historical accuracy). But it's a very enjoyable open world RPG featuring a charming protagonist, a story about family and war and politics, lots of exploration and very pretty graphics of Ancient Greece. The male and the female protagonist (they're siblings, you can play as either of them, the one you don't play appears as an NPC), some of their family members, and a few of their allies and antagonists are in the tag set.

HBO's Rome is having a bit of a resurgence this year so will hopefully get some requests -- two seasons of 10/12 episodes, available on HBO Max streaming, set spanning 52-29 BCE.

Akkadian Empire RPF. Enheduanna, devotional poetry and/or colonial politics optional. There will be a letter up for it soon, just saying.
