They got out-of-the-blue unrequested cancer fic last year. Honestly, I think it's understandable that they'd be a bit paranoid about it this round.

And yeah, they probably should have DNW'd it -- but the thing is, a lot of times you don't realize you need to until it happens.

There's no reason to not DNW.

But man, you don't need to go on for an entire paragraph about how much your last Yuletide fic ruined your entire fucking life because it wasn't something you wanted.

And yes, their writer was a dick for giving cancer fic without asking, but jfc, it was a case of "they sure did deserve each other, huh."

Uh, no. I think their wording is aggressive, especially since the person who bears the brunt of it is probably a perfectly innocent writer. But they did not deserve each other. sandyk did not deserve a hugely upsetting fic on a topic that a reasonable person would avoid writing about for a stranger.

I'm pretty sure what "ruined their life" was, you know, having one of their relatives die from cancer, and the cancerfic was just frosting on the cake.

Jesus christ, this.

If the author had thrown a clown in that story, and it just so happened a clown had murdered the recips parents, then I would find her letter about last year's terrible clown fic over the top.

But cancer really ought to be something anybody with common fucking sense would think twice about putting in a gift story.

cyrt When i first read the first paragraph, my instinct was "maybe this was over the top, they should have kept a stiff upper lip for Appearances"

and then I said, y'know what, fuck that. This ruined their Yuletide. This ruined their day.

Most people do not gift unrequested cancer fic. Most people who do gift unrequested cancer fic will at least stick a fucking "Cancer" tag on there so the reader knows going in! This fic only had "Emotional Hurt/Comfort" (and yeah, cancer is not actually an Archive Warning, I know, but still). This is not what the reasonable person expects for Yuletide, and they didn't even get a tag to give them a heads up that it was coming.

Again, this fic hit some RL stuff for them, came at them unprepared, and ruined their Yuletide last year. They're upset and I think it's 100% reasonable to be upset, and I also think they can share that they were upset if they choose to.

There is a lot of Cult of Nice stuff out there about keeping quiet, being polite, taking the high road -- and in many cases it can make sense, I guess? I've done it myself. But maybe if more people came forward and said "hey, this fic really upset me when it [hit a DNW/had untagged cancer/had untagged animal harm/etc.]", a few of the denser authors out there would start paying a little more attention. I don't know.

Nah, fuck the person giving unrequested cancerfic. I hope they see that letter and know how much they fucked up.
