The letter is a placeholder, how could this happen to me!

How long do you usually wait before asking mods about placeholders?

At least the 8th.

Yes but that's the earliest you can ask. I meant do you usually wait longer or is that not an expected courtesy?

Don't wait longer.

If you want to start on your story, you should start on your story. Not everybody has all the free time in the world to wait for their recipient to get their act together.

Three days is hardly "all the free time in the world".

I don't ask the mods about placeholders. If the recip doesn't care enough to update *shrug* I write a story I'd like based on whatever scant info they gave.

I have a placeholder letter. If it's not update in a week, I'm writing what I want anyway.

I like this approach, but if they a letter super late, like after you've already started/finished, do you feel like you need to go back and revise to give them what they want? What if they put DNWs in there?

I'd check my story for it to avoid a DNW, but that's really on them and not my fault. DNWs need to go in the sign-up, because there are people who don't even read letters. And nobody's obligated to check back for weeks to see if they bothered to write one anyway.

This happened to me once with a placeholder that was updated many weeks into the writing period with DNWs added. It was dumb luck that I happened to check on the letter again and that I didn't hit any of those DNWs. Even if I had, I'm not sure I would have changed the story at that point.
