There are too many pro writers with absolutely garbage prose, especially in the YA genre. But yeah. The raw experience just isn't there, and it's not even a question of age, because I've read some amazing fic by 20-somethings and even teenagers some 10-20 years ago. Whichever coalie said people aren't reading enough might have been right. You need to read different kinds of lit to build your vocab and sense of language, and so much of fic now reads like Tumblr posts.

and the whole "should there be a "good writers only exchange" thing that keeps being brought up is nonsense. i remember lj and those "good writers only" comms and they were just circle jerks of the mods and their friends. writing the same atg crap as everyone else except more pretentious.

I once had a casual exchange of just my friends and the rest of the fandom accused us of doing a good writers only exchange. It was oddly validating.
