That seems like an unnecessarily narrow definition of "rule." They specifically ask you not to apologize in your author's note:

Please keep these positive. Please don't identify yourself - no social media links! Also, please don't apologize for your work, tell your recipient all about what a tough time you had writing, or otherwise ask your recipient to accept a negative sentiment along with their gift.

Yeah this is what bothers me — if I were either of the recipients it would give me such a negative vibe to start my gift without even any well wishing, just an apology for the story being bad (especially when something like the DNW mentions are totally in their control)

A friend of mine did get contacted by mods prior to reveals to fix an overly apologetic A/N.

There's a good chance they already know, but they can only do so much short of removing the work from the collection/getting the recip a replacement gift... which, for an issue of poor tone in A/N, might be extreme?
