OP here. Yes, that's one of the things I despise. Or "barking" used when it doesn't make sense. Also, I dislike (to a lesser degree, but still) dialogue tags that are tonally weird and clearly chosen because the author didn't want to use "said" again. Remarked, exclaimed, mused, argued... that sort of thing works for me only in intentionally formal or historical stories. And even then I often find it distracting and blah.
