Books are not fanfic, and I expect very very different things from books vs. fic. If fic is written like the books I love I would hate it, and if a book was written like fanfics I love, I'd stop reading after chapter 1.

When it comes to emphasis specifically, with books, I don't know the characters and their speech patterns before I start reading, so I don't expect the author to mirror that character voice. That's very different to hearing a character speak on a TV show, and then reading fic about them where ideally, I should be able to hear their voice in my head as I read (but am thrown off because the speech patterns don't come through).

Okay, well I don't just read fanfic for TV shows. Sometimes it's even fanfic for books so that's foreign to me.

Fair enough. Almost all my fandoms are live action, so I expect a good fic to emulate the way the actor voices the character, and emphasis can be a part of that.
