the mods made me post a draft i’d saved even though i’d already actually uploaded the fic before the deadline. come reveals, guess what… both versions turned up. scrambled to delete, but oddly glad it happened to some other people too

I'll bite, why would this happen?

If they posted the draft as the work that filled their assignment, and then posted a non-draft but *not* filling the assignment, this might happen. The YT mods would see that they showed as a default but had a draft fill and tell them they needed to publish the draft asap to count as not defaulting.
