That’s fair. In this situation, I meant that the only way you’d be able to understand how these drabbles related was to know the canon. Characters appear and reappear, offscreen events occur that affect the drabbles but aren’t mentioned at all, and they don’t really tie to one another. I don’t think it breaks the rules, and honestly as a series of drabbles it would be fine! I’m just sort of bummed that it’s not a fic. My author could have picked one of the drabbles and expanded it, and I never would have complained… well, as long as the drabble in question featured my requested characters, since several of them don’t.

Anyway, yeah. I don’t mean to sound ungrateful. I’m just bummed.

I couldn't even guess which characters you might have requested in that. I haven't seen it in years, so does the summary make sense based on some weird phrasing used in the movie, or is it just written wrong?

I wouldn't enjoy that as a gift either, so don't feel bad about being bummed.

I recently consumed this canon and I’m pretty sure the summary doesn’t come from it.

At least you got 10 and not 66. Always a bright side!

That creates an interesting question. If the requirements are that it be a 1000 word story, not any number of shorter stories so long as they add up to 1000 total words, does a set of drabbles actually count?

Hmm, would a five things fic count?

A five things fic that came in just at 1000 words would be basically 5 double-drabbles, give or take slightly different lengths. Unless the writer is really good at short forms, it’s unsatisfying, imo.

I think a proper 5+1 setup has each of the encounters linked together as part of an overall narrative. But people doing six kinktober prompts are writing six separate stories even if they put them together and title it Five Kink Prompts + 1 Wildcard.

I actually thought about this after I saw the fic I received. I haven't read a five things fic in a long time, but my gut instinct was that it wouldn't bother me, and I was trying to figure out why that was — like, if I was just being contrary. The difference, at least to me, would be that a five things fic has an author-created structural spine: "five times character A had sex," "five times character B learned the true meaning of Christmas," etc. That sort of fic implies the existence of a fan-produced master narrative, even if the narrative itself is never explicitly laid out in the fic. There's a uniform authorial vision, albeit unstated.
