Oh, I don't think there's anything wrong with reacting to a seemingly good faith gift that didn't land with a polite but lukewarm comment. But "Thanks for writing!" is just... not that.

Because it's neither particularly polite not lukewarm. It's abrasive and pass-agg.

Imagine if someone gifted you a sweater they knitted for you, and you told them "Thanks for knitting this." and literally nothing else and then you walked off. They'd (rightfully) think "Wow, rude".

For full effect we must also imagine that they gifted you a sweater with lovingly handworked Mr Hands intarsia when their secret santa notes for you said "a candy cane or bath & body works lotion"

I mean, what kind of explanation do you expect here? It's something that would be considered rude in pretty much every situation when a person is given a carefully crafted, personalized gift. Pretending you don't get this and repeating "but whyyyyy" ad nauseum isn't doing yourself any favors.
