IMO this is a lot of coalies being a bit too literal-minded and getting hung up on binaries and yes/no divides.

"No way to get fic for this fandom outside of Yuletide", "no good way that produces satisfying results", "no way that doesn't involve extra costs I'd rather not deal with", or "maybe not impossible but only happened once in five years" all mean the same thing here.

Like, if you refuse to see that Yuletide, where PHs spend days at most lingering, has a special appeal to those of us who sometimes spend the entirety of a creation period and the deadline period lingering as an IPH, then this is just you getting hung up on technicalities instead of trying to understand the intended meaning.

I think it's perfectly understandable to say "getting fic for my ultra rare canons in non-Yuletide exchanges is stressful because I have to make sure I don't request anything more popular and it means I linger for a long time as a PH".

But it's silly to argue that "I have enough fandoms so rare that there's no point requesting them anywhere outside of Yuletide (I still do, I get nada)" means the same thing. Especially in a thread where people earnestly argue that if no one offers your fandoms in exchanges, you won't go out as an IPH until you add fandoms someone offered, which is a pretty massive failure to understand how exchanges work.

But it is (functionally) the same thing in the context the coalie was using it in. Which was about how Yuletide offers a chance to get fic you wouldn't get otherwise (or would have a lot more difficulty getting otherwise). Which it does, even if it's not a guarantee, because it's so big.

I really don't think there's any context where "there's no way to get X" and "it's more difficult to get X" are the same

I think it's pretty common? Maybe not if you're very literal, but "I can't do X" is used as a synonym for "Doing X is unreasonably difficult or involves costs I'm unwilling to pay" is used quite often IMO.

Example: saying you can't get fresh strawberries for your cake probably doesn't mean there is no earthly way you could possibly get fresh strawberries anywhere on the planet. It means there are no fresh strawberries sold where you are, or maybe there are but they're ridiculously expensive, or you'd have to drive a very long way to get them. Unreasonable, not impossible.

But we're getting very off-topic here.

That would only be true if gifts weren't guaranteed in other exchanges.
