The first one, though I'm worse about it in other exchanges where the mods aren't as on top of everything. My secret is writing the beginning and ending and making sure I'm above the word minimum by the posting date, but I've added thousands and thousands of words past the deadline. I've always have a finished fic well before the time the collection goes live, though.

Is it readable? When I've shaken my gifts and they've ballooned between deadline and reveals, they're always riddled with errors like the writer didn't have time or didn't bother to get a beta or even do a second read through. Oh look, much longer unreadable crap, thanks for writing for me I guess.

Personally, between deadline and reveals my stories always turn from “1200 word good start to a fic that I guess stands alone but isn’t very satisfying” to “actual story I meant to write, even if the ending is a little rushed” because that’s just how my brain works (the good stuff doesn’t come out until I’m under pressure like an orange in a juice squeezer). It’s not fun and I wish I could finish earlier with less stress, but my recipients have always been very pleased so I’m mainly the one who suffers haha.

A lot of my favorite gifts went from just over the minimum word count to 8k-20k after the deadline, and none of them were ever sloppily written.
