I mean yeah, please do not use "c*ck" in a sex scene. Cock, on the other hand, is a perfectly serviceable term.

Anyway, what is the canon? Using "manhood" in anything set after the death of Queen Victoria would sound pretty weird to me, just like "joystick" for anything set before 1980 would be odd.

Cock is nice in that way because it's been used to mean penis since the 14th century, so it's fairly timeless.

Other alternatives:
Dick - Length - Rod - Shaft - Erection (obvious only while it's erect) - Prick (for British fandoms) - Phallus (if you are writing fic set in Ancient Rome)

I'm also a fan of switching it up. Even if you think you have found the perfect word for human genitals, it will start sounding awkward the tenth time you use it in a row.
