I'm not a mod, and obviously not on that Discord server, but I think this here is the crux of the issue:

vented to each other in DMs about it. But I cannot fathom taking it to anywhere else, especially anywhere like a whole Discord server with people we don’t know on it

I'm not a mod, and obviously not on that Discord server, but I think this here is the crux of the issue:

Discord (especially smaller private servers where you might not know everyone but you know a lot of people who are frequently posting) often feels more private than it is and sometimes gives you the illusion that you're just privately chatting with friends. I've sometimes posted stuff I really shouldn't have because I forgot that at the end of the day, it's still a fairly public place and not a WhatsApp group. I can imagine that also contributes to what happened here.

I feel this happens where there's a clique. If the roughly 15-20 mods are all friendly then maybe they forgot they weren't alone.

Sucks to say this news is brought to them by putting a participant in a fucked up situation though.

Yeah, I think you're right.

And possibly also contributed to the defensiveness. Those comments can't be unacceptable! They come from people we like! /thinks the clique

Yup. I find for a lot of discords there's very often a core group of active users that get so used to sharing their thoughts that they forget that lurkers exist and that there's more than just their group of friends in the same server.
