100% for real?? I never said this power was great in any way, or useful outside of what is ultimately a low-stakes hobby. But mods by definition have power over the participants in their exchanges. Power to grant or deny requests for an EPH, in this case, but also power to ban the participant outright, and that's not even touching on how they have access to sensitive information — like, say, a participant's identity even if they anon a fic.

You should stop doing exchanges if you are paranoid about people "in power" having access like this. You started with acknowledging this is a low-stakes hobby. So are the potential outcomes. Someone hypothetically might not get an EPH. Someone hypothetically might not get to participate in this exchange in the future. Someone hypothetically might tell someone else you wrote that orphaned fic with the giant DNW in it. Yes. All of this is possible with every exchange you sign up for. Mods have your email address if you signed up and they can see your work as soon as it leaves Draft status. That's the sensitive information you're worried about and if you're that worried, get a burner email and a sock.

It's not about the information, it's about the person using their (yes, minor, everyone has acknowledged that) power to be a bully by exposing their information to a hundred other people while insulting them and inviting the other people to insult them.

Do you believe that everything that was said in the server about the recip would have a different effect on the person who was targeted if they were using a sock?

Do you believe that it somehow wouldn't be bullying from a position of (minor) power if it was? This is the weirdest deflection bro.

CYRT

I don't know why you're arguing with me. I don't think people shit talking someone for requesting a PH feels significantly better when signing up with a sock. Also please stop over-curating your language and caping for the shithead mods with this "minor" power thing. These quibbles are ridiculous.

I don't see why you read it as a deflection. CYRT was poking holes in the other coalie's heavy leaning on "paranoia over leaked information" by pointing out that mods bitching about you behind your back is hurtful regardless of whether it's tied to your larger online identity.

"Paranoid" and "worried about" are strange readings of my comment. Saying someone has power in a situation is a neutral and accurate descriptor and in no way implies anxiety about it, nor does it imply I think the stakes are high. I brought up the identifying information thing because it's relevant to the CIRT's question of whether or not the mods have power. "Stop doing exchanges" is not a proportionate response to someone saying they expect a certain level of tact and respect from the people running the show.

There's always some dipshit who'll see a post like "I don't want to get shit-talked and my request and exchange presence picked apart by the people running events in my hobby I do for fun and positivity" and go "Wow if you're so PARANOID then you should stop doing exchanges".

Like clockwork, every damn time.
