My assumption is it's a gift EO wrote for them. That would also explain how he knew the comment had been deleted, because I sure as hell wouldn't notice that on any fic but my own.

Eh, not necessarily. It's clearer a comment has been deleted if the author's replied to it.

The comment being deleted is easy to see if the author replied. What is weird is being able to find a rejected gift.
