You and your writer - and you and your recipient - don't really know each other or each other's preferences. You know that you like the same canons and characters, and so that's the starting point you both have...


Also I'd say even a fix-it assumes you both like something about canon. When you're asking for someone to fix the canon, it means there was something about it worth saving.
