It is fine to write someone canon-typical content. You know the recipient likes the canon.
It is possible that Person A will write canon-typical content for Person B who did not realize that was a possibility. Entirely by accident, Person A may have taught Person B a lesson. They will also have given a gift in good faith. No one is aiming to teach a lesson. It just sometimes happens when one person is wrong and another person does a thing that challenges the wrong assumption.
I said "I guess. With brutal pragmatism, I'll be glad when you write them earnest canon-typical gore and they learn not to do that again." not because I am fantasising about someone's distress and disappointment in their gift and the ascendance of moral superiority, but because people will then be on the same page.
