I think IN SPAAAACE is fine, but you signed up to write fanfic for a particular fandom using particular characters and I also think that, for a blank signup, you should at least end up with something that feels canon-like even if it's not the actual canon setting. Like absent a prompt, canon is the prompt, if that makes sense?

CYRT

It does make sense, it's just very different from the "Write whatever the hell you want, you can't fuck it up" that I'm getting from some other corners of the thread here.

It doesn't seem there is anything resembling a consensus about how to approach blank sign-ups, which leads me to raise an eyebrow at the people who seem baffled that anyone would be bothered by blank sign-ups.

"If it's blank then just write what you want!" But as soon as you scratch the surface there are actually a lot of unspoken implicit assumptions in play about what's covered and not covered by "write what you want".

I have no strong feelings about this, though. I will try writing for blank sign-up for a few rounds and will report back in five years.

"Do what you will" is the whole of the law but coaltide is a clear example of why "provided it harms nobody" had to be explicitly added for the people in the back.
