Would you write a setting change AU for a blank sign up?

- Yes
- No
- Depends

Yes, if I felt like it was a good way to showcase something else about the canon, like it was a good vehicle for a character study.

No, but I would likely not write a setting change AU for a request either, unless it was their only request, it was obviously their most wanted request, or it was a request that immediately sparked a full and workable idea.

I'd be more likely to write a setting change AU for a blank sign-up than I would be to write a setting change AU for a sign-up that had prompts that were not setting change AU.

I'll write whatever I want for a blank signup tbh

Probably not because usually for a Yuletide fandom I'm in it for the canon. But if it really called out for a setting swap AU, sure.

No. I would never write a setting change AU at all.

+1

I will take a blank signup as a carte blanche. There are all sorts of things I would write for a blank signup that other people would not. But I wouldn't write a setting change AU to begin with, simply because I don't really like them.

Yes, but only if I was changing the setting from modern office to ancient Babylon or futuristic space/space opera setting and not sff to high school.

No, I would never write a setting change AU unless it was prompted for.

I want to say "no" but that would be a lie because I have literally done this.

It was one of the best things I ever wrote for Yuletide, and the recip loved it (and came back a year later to reiterate how much they loved it), so it worked out.

But I knew at the time that I was pushing my luck and did it anyway.

I did. The signup was completely blank, not even characters selected, no DNWs. There was no letter. Their AO3 had like five bookmarks and no fic. I decided that anyone who gave me so little to go on had to be game for anything and wrote a complete setting change for a fandom that did not lend itself to that.

The recip loved it. Multiple enthusiastic comments, a comment six months later to tell me they were re-reading it.

I think my reasoning was sound. If they had preferences, they'd give you something to go on. If they don't, take your most wild idea and run with it. That way at least you know you'll have fun.

That you rolled the dice and came up with snake eyes does not mean gambling is a good idea, sorry! Confirmation bias.

My point is that with a blank signup, everything is a dice roll. Might as well roll the dice on something you'll enjoy writing. Again: if they cared, they'd say SOMETHING.

Snake eyes is a bad roll. You don’t want to roll snake eyes.
