Nah, what I'm saying is you can't fuck up writing them a fic they requested, because they have explicitly requested "whatever you want to write".
(I mean. Within basic Yuletide rules, obviously. If you write them spite poetry or recent war criminal RPF or picklefic you will have fucked up. But that would be true regardless of the signup.)
Most people probably would be disinclined to write someone necro with golden showers for a blank signup, but that's about the writers' own feelings, and honestly if I had a blank signup with a pairing where that was IC I'd do it. I don't think I've literally ever seen a case of a recip complaining that they had a blank signup and didn't like what they got. Usually they really are people who are happy to spin the wheel. The people who get upset about it are writers who would never dream of posting a blank singup.
(You've probably got a higher risk of no comment with a blank signup but that's true regardless of if they like the fic.)
IDK: are there any people in this thread who have done blank signups? Did you have limits on what you would have been willing to get? Did you like what you got?
I did it one year when my spare cycles were at a low ebb in October and got utter blandness, which is realistically the biggest risk of a blank signup; I would honestly have preferred weird niche kink or major character death whump or something.

DC here: I was curious about that too so I started a new thread for it here:

See, my own hesitation here is that a blank sign-up can be any of:
-person who genuinely means "surprise me" -person who signed up last minute and wishes they had put details in -person who's a sock and dgaf -person who's new and doesn't even consider the range of things they might be opting into
and I don't want to make that last person miserable.
Yeah I think we agree, I just don't get the bellyaching about how a blank signup is horrible because what if they don't know what they've opted into. Bluntly, that is only a problem if you're willfully ignorant about what the median person would enjoy or if your anxiety is ruling your behavior.

(Anonymous) 2024-10-28 08:23 pm (UTC)(link)If it helps, think of a blank signup as the same as one that just says "surprise me". Surprise them.
Blank signup people are certifying that getting a yt present they don't like won't ruin anything for them. You can't fuck it up.

I mean, I obviously can fuck it up. What you're actually trying to say is that it won't be my fault if I fuck it up.
And that's true, but that doesn't make it the kind of gift-giving experience I welcome.

(Anonymous) 2024-10-28 09:36 pm (UTC)(link)Exactly. So in practice, I don't tend to take a blank sign-up as true enthusiastic permission to write anything.
But overall I'm happy with the situation. I don't find this the burden "what's too much??" some people seem to.
