Yes, long comments can be nice. A short comment is still an acknowledgment! Someone who leaves a single-sentence thank you is okay, actually.

Because of timezones, the archive tends to open for me in the gap between the kids opening their presents and my having to start lunch, so I can usually comment pretty much immediately.

Length of a comment doesn't actually reflect how much someone liked it and it's very weird to judge whether or not something was worth doing based on the response you get.

But "the response you get" literally is the only mean you have to assess whether your recip liked what you wrote or not

Yes, and sometimes it’s insufficient.
