Some of my fics that my recips loved best have skirted DNWs (a general kidfic DNW; prompt for cuteness and character's pet pov; wrote about pet interacting with baby animals) (a character death DNW, prompt for exploring canon religion, which was heavy on afterlife stuff; included a canonically-dead character as a canon-compliant psychopomp) (no sexual content dnw, prompt for canon pairing who are canonically very into each other sexually rekindling their relationship after canon, included extremely heavy flirting, fade to black, then wakeup in bed together) (likes: noncon/dubcon, trauma, angst, DNW "requested ships being toxic or abusive unless it's canonical, uncomfortable power dynamics unless it's canonical, more prompts and details in the letter", placeholder letter, requested ship was... complicated, wrote toxic angsty dubcon with weird power dynamics)
That said it's early enough in the writing period there's absolutely no reason to risk it without checking through the mods what the limits of the dnws are. All of the above I checked in with the mods and either got and "oh I never intended that to be part of the DNW, that would be great" or dead silence.
I don't think "I checked through the mods and the recip okayed it" counts as skirting a DNW. Clarifying the DNW is generally good, just writing something that skirts the DNW is highly risky.
If these had been my DNWs, I would have said "hell no" to at least two of these and would have reacted very badly if someone had written it without asking.
I really hope you would not have left a prompt consisting only of a noncanon pairing and a noncon/dubcon like, DWN'd "toxic relationships unless its canon, more details in letter", not answered mod requests, and then left your letter a placeholder forever. I didn't feel guilty about skirting the DNW in that one, tbh.
Having received a fic where the most charitable way to look at it is "they think they are just skirting my DNWs and they think they are correctly interpreting that one thing I listed as being okay", all I can say is:
Bless you for checking with the recips before gifting them that.
? The start of this thread was someone saying their idea they haven't written yet might skirt a dnw. That is the scenario. I was giving examples of when an idea skirted a dnw and turned out fine.
Also, tbh, I would say if a story skirts a DNW it still skirts the DNW even if the recip ok's it. Saying you don't mind if something glances off a DNW a particular way doesn't change what the original dnw was (and in a yuletide context, doesn't change what anyone looking at the original request would think the DNW was.)
